Lost homoerotic masterpiece from the last days of the Soviet Union. Like so much of the best of Russian cinema, the narrative is obscure, but the visual beauty undeniable. Some of the tableaux rank with the best of gay/queer cinema. i'm thinking Genet, De Kuyper, Jarman, Sokurov, but this is no gay movie flying a Rainbow flag, How could it be coming from a society where even heterosexual kissing on screen remained taboo until relatively recently, let alone any question of homosexuality.
