Audi S3 Sportback vs Mercedes Benz A 45 AMG Acceleration 2014
Audi’s A3 lineup continues to expand—at least overseas—and the latest sibling to arrive is this S3 Sportback, which is how Audi says hot five-door. The spicier S3 with two additional doors joins the S3 three-door, as well as the regular-grade A3 and A3 Sportback, in Audi’s European lineup. More A3 variations are on their way, including a sedan we’ll get in here in the U.S. and an A3-based droptop that we expect to hit our shores, too. But back to the S3 Sportback—it’s basically the same as the three-door S3, only with slightly more practicality baked in.
Sporty, With Back Doors
Like the three-door S3, the Sportback is powered by a warmed-over EA888 turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The result is 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, which is routed to all four wheels via Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Two transmissions are offered: a six-speed manual and a six-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic. Audi claims the S tronic–equipped S3 Sportback can run from 0–62 mph in five seconds flat, with the manual requiring an additional half of a second. The S3’s lowered sport suspension and handsome 18-inch wheels carry over to the Sportback, too.
The standard array of brushed-aluminum doo-dads and body mods signifying the Sportback’s S status also migrate directly from the three-door S3. These items include the shiny grille trim, front intake accents, mirror caps, more aggressive body kit, black-painted brake calipers (red ones are optional), and bad-ass-looking quad exhaust outlets. Inside, Audi’s Drive Select drive-mode selector offers up Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, or Efficiency modes; models equipped with the optional MMI infotainment controller get an Individual mode, too.
Audi claims the new S3 Sportback is lighter than before, a common theme amongst Volkswagen Group’s new wave of compacts based on the new MQB modular architecture. (The platform also serves as the foundation in the new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf.) In the case of the Sportback, Audi says it shaved 154 pounds relative to the outgoing model, mostly from increased use of aluminum in the five-door’s body.
The likelihood of the S3 Sportback making it to U.S. dealerships isn’t high, as even the more plebeian A3 Sportback hasn’t been confirmed for our market, despite the fact that the outgoing A3 sold in the U.S. featured the same body style. We’re not holding our breath for any A3 variant with a hatch—save for perhaps the A3 Sportback—and it’s probably telling that Mercedes-Benz is sending us only its CLA and hotter CLA45 AMG compact sedans, and not the A-class or A45 AMG hatchbacks. But if the S3 and S3 Sportback are good for anything, it’s previewing what we should expect from a potential S3 sedan that we would get. And we’re okay with a 300-hp, all-wheel-drive compact sedan.
