In-place annealing of 3DP stepper gears is remarkably effective. The shrinkage associated with the recrystallization of PLA during low-temperature annealing is used to good effect to lock a 3DP gear onto a slotted stepper shaft, resulting in a tight joint. The slight shrinkage of the herringbone gear is also a benefit in addressing overtight gear coupling with no loss of functionality. Lastly, the annealing process itself makes the assembly resistant to stepper heat. Annealing conducted in 160F water for 50 minutes with stepper, gear and set screw all in place but not tightened.
