After fierce fighting near the highway of the Damascus international airport that lasted for three days, Syrian army units completely restored security to the Matahin area in Damascus suburbs. Large numbers of militants were killed during the battle while some others retreated back to Eastern al-Ghouta. Many of their vehicles were also destroyed.
In late July, foreign backed militants attacked the al-Ghizlania mills in al-Matahin area, killed the workers and looted large amounts of grain and flour. Armed men were also using the mills as strongholds against the Syrian army.
Fire was still breaking out in parts of the mills when Press TV team arrived to the place because of heavy fighting. Foreign-backed insurgents also sabotaged many of the machines inside.
The strategic importance of this battle lies in the location of the mills as they connect Eastern al-Ghouta with the other secured areas under the control of the army including the airport.
By securing al-Matahin area, the Syrian army has blocked the way in front of foreign backed militants who have been trying to infiltrate and take more ground close to the Damascus international airport and its highway. Syrian army units have made it clear that operations will continue until securing all the areas that surround the Damascus international airport.
