In the world of search, sites that are ranked first in the search results have higher click through rates. Sites that are on pages 2, 3, and so on, arent visited frequently if at all. Think about yourself. How many times have you ventured off to different pages of the search results to see what other results there are.
It's important to remember that there are many different aspects of SEO. Sometimes SEO requires technical changes, while sometimes it is more content related. However, all lead to the same end goal, which is to help your site rank higher in the search results. Sometimes SEO is just a matter of changing up the structure of your site. The major commercial search engines where web traffic comes from is Google, Bing, and Yahoo!.
At the end of the day you want to increase the number of visitors your site receives from search engines. Traffic from search engines can make or break a site. Ranking number one can give you extraordinary exposure, and lead to more revenue, etc.

Remember, that at the end of the day SEO is an on-going process to make sure your site performs well and can be found in search engine searches. It doesn't happen overnight.
