As work continues through the night in the middle and upper chutes of the Lake Oroville main spillway, multiple crews place, test, and finish concrete for one of the project’s many structural slabs. Over the course of a shift, a pump truck, located outside of the chute, pumps concrete over the spillway sidewalls and into the prepared formwork. Technicians collect a sample of concrete, perform a slump test, and document the results. The placement crew consolidates and uses a hand-cranked vibrating screed to level off the concrete to the slab’s design elevation. In the early morning light, the finishing crew uses hand and power trowels to work the final surface of the slab.
