this is something i039ve always wanted on the appletv i was lucky enough to get hold of the appletv developers kit and here is the result using tvos beta 2the tvos app is based on les bird039s code i found here :- http:wwwlesbirdcomimame4allimame4all_xcodehtmlthe original work is based on imame4all which is a ios universal app port of mame 037b5 emulator by nicola salmoria for all ios devices ipad hd iphone 4g ipod touch and older based on gp2x wiz mame4all 25 by franxis i created a target for tvos and set about getting the code to compile for arm64 mandatory for appletv fixed a varierty of compiler and linker errors removed code which was incompatible with tvos frameworks and simplified code to work on tvos added a basic icon compatible with tvos i added some tweaks to the source to allow the pause button to exit the game and supporting the resolution for the 1080p displaythe controller being used is the steelseries stratus xl and paired to the appletv via the bluetooth settingsmost games are running well though there are some sound issues with metal slug and street fighter which i suspect are arm64 related which i still need to investigatedon039t expect to see this on the app store any time soon as apple doesn039t allow emulators of any kindupdate: september 29th i039ll work on the source a little more and endeavour to release the source code around the time the appletv launches to the public

introducing doom on the apple watchupdate: mehdi mulani that worked with me on this port also ported doom to the soon-to-be-released apple tv https:youtubekphyme60f4swait rewind how and why on earth did this happenso we had a 10-hour hackathon in our facebook tel-aviv office and the idea was to hack around ios stuff apple has released beta versions for watchos 2 that lets you run native apps on the watch and we thought it could be fun to port doom over to it not to mention the fact that john carmack is a colleague omghaving only a few hours we figured we039d better start with the simplest version of doom we could find a quick search and we found ndoom which seemed very interesting this thing runs on a graphing calculators it should run on a watch mmm rightxcode - file - new project a few hours and quite a few code fixes later and the code compiled ok apart from the fact it insta-crashed we were at least getting somewhere after fixing the first few crashes we chose to believe that the number of places where the code crashes must be finite and going head-to-head with this will hopefully take less than the few hours we have leftfor the next few hours we had to quickly understand what makes this doom code tick integrate its run loop with ours figure out how to output an image from this thing come up with controls that fit on a watch tune the performance fix mysterious bugs eventually this is what we ended up with: as you can039t overlay ui elements on the watch we used interface groups to create a 3x3 grid of buttons the lower buttons are toggles for walking around and the upper are used for shooting and opening doors we found doom039s buffer that holds the actual pixel data for each frame every time there039s a new frame to display we use coregraphics to turn the buffer into a uiimage this initially gave us grayscale images but after figuring out doom039s color palettes and applying them we039ve got color we now set this image as the background image for the top most container we used the ui thread to dispatch iterations of doom039s run loop we wired button clicks to post events to doom as if they were coming from a keyboard by far the most intensive task was drawing images to the screen trying to draw them too fast resulted in an annoying unresponsiveness tweaking uiimage039s properties and only updating the image if anything has changed allowed us to squeeze some more juiceand the result can be seen in the video disclaimer: this isnt production code and rather was a kick ass hackathon project so we wont be making the source code available as its an examplewell now after we039re done with this the coffee machine with its color touch screen just stares at us waiting for the next hackathonyou can find my original post here: https:wwwfacebookcomlior2bvideos10153571527835789
