a billion dollars to buy democracy

money is destroying our politics and our political system our electoral system has become such a joke that two late-night comedians created their own superpac and generated great laughter just by showing how one operatestwo years ago in a case known as citizens united the five-man republican majority of the supreme court ruled that corporations are quotpersonsquot under the first amendment and that no act of congress can restrict the amount a corporation can spend in an election this would have staggered our founding fathers corporations in their present form did not even exist in 1789 when the bill of rights was ratified the bill of rights was written to protect individuals from the power of government it was never intended to give artificial entities any right to participate in our electionsto save our democracy we must get the influence of money out of our elections since the supreme court majority is opposed to such reform the answer is a constitutional amendmenthouse joint resolution 100 which i introduced is a constitutional amendment that will require all campaigns for the federal offices of president vice-president senator and representative to be financed exclusively with public funds it will prohibit any expenditures from any other source including the candidate my amendment would be ratified by quotconventionsquot of the various states the same procedure by which our constitution was ratified the people of each state will elect representatives to a convention for the sole purpose of voting on the amendment that way it will be the people not the politicians who will decide this issuesave our democracy support joint resolution 100

a congressional summit to overturn citizens united

so what did we learn from monday night039s defeat of the buffet rule in the senate well - first and foremost - we learned that republicans in the senate did exactly what their billionaire campaign donors told them to do - prevent a tax increase on the romney rich we also learned that a majority of senators can039t pass legislation anymore 51 out of 100 senators voted for the buffet rule - a clear majority - but the bill failed - because of a republican filibuster and we also learned that the american people have lost their voice on capitol hill a recent cnn poll found that 72 of americans - including a majority of republicans - support that very same buffet rule that the republicans blocked in the senate monday night unfortunately - those 72 of americans don039t have multi-millionaire lobbyists like multimillionaire grover norquist working for them and therefore can039t buy off lawmakers to listen to them and now - thanks to the supreme court039s citizens united decision - a millionaire can walk up to a member of congress and threaten to fund a campaign for their opponent in the next election if he or she doesn039t vote the way the millionaire wants with that power - don039t expect the oligarchs039 grip on power to loosen at least not until we pass a constitutional amendment to overturn citizens united and explicitly say that corporations are not people and that money is property - not speech luckily - there are some in congress working to do just that members of congress - activists and leaders within the movement to overturn citizens united will meet for a summit on capitol hill what will be discussed at the summit - and what do attendees hope to accomplish congressman ted deutch from florida039s 19th district will be at the summit and he039s here tonight to tell us more about itjoin the movement to kick corporations and the romney super-rich out of our elections - go to movetoamendorg
oil barons of the world target north pole

the oil barons of the world - and the militaries that rely on that oil - are seeing new opportunities in the north pole as global climate change kicks into high gear warming weather is leading to the northern ice cap melting - uncovering a treasure trove of oil and natural gas reserves scientists believe that the arctic is storing 13 of the world039s untapped oil - and nearly a third of the world039s undiscovered natural gas as the ice melts - access to these resources becomes easier and shipping lanes open - so now northern nations are scrambling to stake out their chunk of arctic resources as well as running military operations in the area should they have to fight for these resources in the not too distant future in fact - two months ago - military leaders from the united states canada russia iceland denmark sweden norway and finland met to discuss security issues around the arctic but shouldn039t these nations have the exact opposite approach to disappearing ice in the arctic why are we looking for more fossil fuels to burn while we039re watching our world melt from fossil-fuel induced climate change dan howells joins me now - he is the deputy campaigns director for greenpeace usa
would sigmund freud have a field day with republicans

sigmund freud came up with the idea of psychological projection - which is basically when someone projects onto other people belief or actions that they themselves hold or have carried out but are in denial about for example - if someone is a habitual liar - they might hide it by accusing others around them of lying it sure looks like mitt romney is guilty of this sort of psychological projection after all - one of the central messages of his campaign is how awful obamacare is - even though mitt romney was the first to enact a version of obamacare in massachusetts while he was a governor and while the issue of healthcare is the most obvious form of projection by mitt romney - there are several others
the good the bad and the very very philogastricously ugly

the good eric schoenberg despite the republicans039 filibuster of the buffett rule last night - it seems like more and more millionaires are ready and willing to pay their fair share of taxes the bad fox news yesterday - the romney campaign chose the adviser responsible for vetting and choosing a vp candidate the official fox and friends twitter account tweeted quotromney has hired an advisor to do his vp search who should we choosequot and the very very ugly us department of defense a report on cnn over the weekend revealed that women in each branch of the military are routinely diagnosed with mental conditions and dismissed from duty after filing sexual harassment complaints
