tesla model s autopilot saved the car autonomously from a side collision from a boom lift truck i was driving down the interstate and you can see the boom lift truck in question on the left side of the screen on a joining interstate road once the roads merged the truck tried to get to the exit ramp on the right and never saw my tesla i actually wasn039t watching that direction and tessy the name of my car was on duty with autopilot engaged i became aware of the danger when tessy alerted me with the quotimmediately take overquot warning chime and the car swerving to the right to avoid the side collision you can see where i took over when there039s a little bit of blip in the steering tessy had already moved to the right to avoid the collision i was not able to slow down even more due to the heavy traffic cars were behind me once i got behind him i slowly added more room between us until he exited i was not tail gating after the incidentit was a mistake on the other driver039s part he did not even know i was there until i honked my horn there was a group of women in the black sedan to my left and they went nuts about the guy and what he did all kinds of gesturing in their car once i was beside the truck as it slowed down on the ramp the guy gestured a quotsorryquot i gave him quotit039s okayquot wavetessy did great i have done a lot of testing with the sensors in the car and the software capabilities i have always been impressed with the car but i had not tested the car039s side collision avoidance i am very impressed excellent job elonnote: i have over 39000 miles on the car and i039ve had it since mid-july 2015 hands down the best car i have ever owned and use it to its full extent it has done many many amazing things but this was one of the more interesting things caught on the dashcam note: it039s a really poor dashcam so sorry for the poor video quality note 2: in case you039re curious i039m listening to an audiobook in the background it039s a malcolm gladwell book excellent book

please do not re-upload without contacting me first thanksone year ago today i almost died here is the video of the incidenti039m primarily posting this in an attempt to help others learn from my mistakes this is a reminder to be safe pay attention and know the road before you try to have quotfunquot on it i failed on all 3 of those accounts and it nearly cost me my life i039ve more than learned my lesson and would hope some others do by my examplepart of the story i posted last year on my facebook here is the full story since youtube039s character limit unfortunately doesn039t allow me to post the full thing: http:justpasteitq79c to follow updates with what i039m working on now follow my instagram: http:wwwinstagramcomjshaw6000shortened story below:quotthis past sundaythis past sunday jan 4 2015 i received a second chance at lifewhat happened to put it simply i was distracted at the one moment that required 110 focus on an unfamiliar roadas an auto enthusiast when you have a nice relatively fast car with a loud exhaust you tend to like tunnels they make your exhaust sound that much better sort of like singing in the shower well i found myself accelerating through this nice long and dark pair of tunnels i had done this many times before in other tunnels at the exit i could barely see because it was so bright a person standing and holding something while motioning wondering what they were doing i stared and stared reaching the top of 4th gear all while trying to comprehend what they were trying to tell me then i figured it out they were telling me to slow down and watch the curve ahead but it was too late when i think about it now i dont ever remember seeing the road ahead until i was nearly out of the tunnel in my mind i had assumed that it just went straight at that point i was exiting the tunnel straight as the road curved to the left i had no time to slam on my brakes beforehand realizing i was going way too fast for that section i applied the brakes softly in an effort to keep the back end from sliding out but combined with a bump and rough switch in surface texture from concrete to asphalt i lost traction i began sliding to the left the car oversteering rotating counter-clockwise over the center marker i counter-steered turning the steering wheel all the way to the right but kept sliding to the left into the turnout it was at this moment i knew i had fucked upi slammed into a berm and expected to come to a complete stop but the terrifying journey wasnt over i went over the edge it happened so fast all i can remember is everything crashing and spinning i thought i was rolling over down the side of the mountain i was confident i was going to land upside down and get crushed i was on the world039s worst roller coaster that could only end with death or so i thought i came to a stop still yelling not fully comprehending what just happened or how far down the mountain i was and that i actually just crashed my car luckily for me i landed on a rock wall that was part of a drainage pipe that went through the mountain it was the only horizontally level piece on an extremely steep sloped hill had i spun off a few feet before or after id be deadi never thought that i would be one of the guys that wrecks his car in the canyons im not even close to being a pro driver but i take a little pride in my situational awareness while driving my somewhat decent understanding of vehicle dynamics and how various driver inputs affect a vehicle in motion my autocross and canyon experience and the fact that i havent gotten any tickets or into any accidents since i got my license i guess i got too comfortable at the wrong moment and it got the best of me it shows that things like this can happen to mostly anyone the whole cruise up there was relaxed leisurely until that moment i definitely wasnt purposely trying to take that corner fast i was caught up in the moment flying through those long tunnels got distracted and didnt see the road ahead of me i panicked last minute and that ultimately lead to this entire situation im disappointed in myself and i know some others may be disappointed in me as well and i know it could have been worse in so many ways and im kicking myself for that but ultimately im glad to be alive and wellquotcar is a 2004 subaru forester xt
