Bookmarked 719 weeks ago when the elephant keepers at the smithsonian039s national zoo hear the sound of a harmonica it039s not the radio they039ve left on instead it039s the zoo039s 36-year-old asian elephant shanthi who unsolicited has a propensity for coming up with her own ditties using whatever instruments the keepers have provided these include harmonicas horns and other noisemakers the zoo has captured some of shanthi039s most recent capriccios on this video the keepers provided the instruments after they noticed that shanthi more so than the zoo039s two other elephants likes to make noise with objects according to keepers she will use her trunk to cover anything with a hole in it and blow until it makes a soundand will often coax the objects to get different types of sounds from it she taps objects with her trunk and flaps her ears against objects that make noise now they give the melodious pachyderm noisemakers as a form of enrichment shanthi is the mother of the zoo039s 10-year-old calf kandula asian elephants are endangered in the wild where 30000 to 50000 asian elephants still live in the forests of south and southeast asia visitors to the zoo can watch an elephant demonstration which sometimes includes shanthi039s musical skills at 11 am most days at the zoo039s elephant trails |

baylor and tupelo in the pool
Bookmarked 778 weeks ago now that spring is approaching and the temperatures are slowly rising kids all over houston are starting to think about swimming and playing outside the baby elephants at the houston zoo are no exception recently the keepers gave baylor and tupelo a big kiddie pool now that baylor weighs more than 1100 pounds and tupelo weighs more than 600 pounds the small inflatable pools do not last longer than 5 minutes without getting popped the babies now get a family size pool which is 120 inches in length and holds both calves it is a lot more durable this size pool lasts for about 5 uses before it has to be replaced playing in the pool is a fun enrichment activity for the babies and the pool is given to them when the weather allows pool time is unannounced and unplanned guests who happen to be in the area around the elephant deck at the right time get to enjoy watching the calves splash around in the pool for those guests who want to see a guaranteed elephant bath the keepers do bath everyday at 10am with a keeper chat at the barn windows read more on our elephant blog: http:houstonzooblogsorgelephant |
