Bookmarked 587 weeks ago booklet foreword:quoti know that i once said that i didn039t intend to release any more cds of stan039s work there has been an ongoing request for a quotbest ofquot remastering the first five of his albums became an ideal situation on many levels i think paul has sufficiently explained all that039s happened to bring this cd to life we hope you like it yes there are bound to be those among you who may not agree 100 with the choices but you039ll have to admit we039ve come pretty close to the ideal that said saying anything more than quotenjoyquot would be superfluousquot-ariel rogersproducer039s notes:quotfor a long time ariel and i had been talking about releasing a compilation recording of some of stan039s best work and at the same time i had been hoping to remaster these recordings using the modern digital technology now available last year ariel decided the time had come and she agreed to release a quotbest of stan rogersquot cd and remaster the entire catalogue at the same time i was very excited to be asked to take on the production responsibilitythe first step was to unearth the original tapes containing the final mixes of all the original recordings ariel rolled up to my place a couple of months ago with a trunk full of tapes and we hauled them into my living room for a look-see sitting through these tapes was a real trip down memory lane for me bringing back lots of memories of those wonderful recording sessions back in the seventies and early eighties we were able to find the originals- fortunately i had labeled accurately back theni then took the mix tapes to richard hess039s place to have them transferred into the digital audio format besides being a great fan of stan039s music richard has built a solid reputation as one of the best in the business at restoring old tapes it039s not simply a matter of playing them back into a digital converter the process often involves baking the tape for several hours to stabilize the backing so the tape can be played without the oxide being stripped off then it039s finding just the right tape player and aligning it to the tape being played for the techies among you everything was transferred using a sampling frequency of 96khz and a word length of 24 bits this provides the highest quality digital reproduction available todayi then took the digitized audio to joao carvahlo at joao carvahlo mastering in toronto this is one of the finest mastering facilities in canada and joao has possibly the best set of ears in the business i worked closely with joao and through a painstaking process of careful manipulation tone shaping and digital processing he was able to bring new life to these tracksso all of the records are now remastered to the highest standards using the latest technology and we have chosen 16 tracks for this collection deciding what to choose for a best of collection was tricky but among the titles here are stan039s most popular and enduring songs along with a few others that show him as the songwriting master he wasi want to thank richard and joao for the great care and skill they brought to this work and of course ariel for making it all possible we hope you will enjoy this trip down memory lane as much as we have enjoyed putting it all togetherquot-paul mills toronto october 2009track listing:1: fogarty039s cove2: free in the harbour3: white squall4: make and break harbour5: barrett039s privateers6: the flowers of bermuda7: tiny fish for japan8: the last watch9: forty-five years10: northwest passage11: lock-keeper12: the idiot13: the jeannie c14: the fields behind the plow15: lies16: the mary ellen carter |

Bookmarked 523 weeks ago i made a batch of charcoal using the mound method then stored it in baskets for later use charcoal is a fuel that burns hotter than the wood it039s made from this is because the initial energy consuming steps of combustion have taken place while making the charcoal driving off the volatile components of the wood such as water and sap the result is a nearly pure carbon fuel that burns hotter than wood without smoke and with less flame charcoal was primarily a metallurgical fuel in ancient times but was sometimes used for cooking too to make the charcoal the wood was broken up and stacked in to a mound with the largest pieces in the center and smaller sticks and leaves on the out side the mound was coated in mud and a hole was left in the top while 8 smaller air holes were made around the base of the mound a fire was kindled in the top of the mound using hot coals from the fire and the burning process beganthe fire burned down the inside of the mound against the updraft i reason that this is a better way to make charcoal as the rising flames have used up the oxygen and prevent the charcoal already made above them from burning while driving out even more volatiles i watched the air holes at the base of the mound and when the fire had burned right up to each opening i plugged them with mud once all 8 holes had be sealed the hole in the top of the mound was sealed with mud and the mound left to cool from lighting the mound to closing up the holes the whole process took about 4 hoursthe next day when the mound was cool to the touch this can take about 2 days sometimes i opened the mound the resulting charcoal was good quality some wood near the air entries had burned to ash though these were only small twigs and leaves this is the reason small brush is put on the out side of the mound to be burned preferentially to the larger wood on the inside thus protecting the large pieces of charcoalthe charcoal that was made was hard and shiny when broken open it had the ray structure of the wood preserved when moving the hand through it the charcoal sounded tinny like coral on a beach being moved by waves these are signs of good quality bad charcoal is soft breaks easily and has a muffled sound i intend to use the charcoal to produce hotter fires than i039m able to with wood alone from my research a natural draft furnace using wood a kiln can reach a maximum of 1400 c degrees whereas a natural draft furnace using charcoal can reach 1600 c degrees achieving high temperatures is necessary for changing material to obtain better technology eg smelting ore into metal |
