inverse-foley animation: synchronizing rigid-body motions to sound

inverse-foley animation: synchronizing rigid-body motions to sound from the siggraph 2014 paper by langlois and jamesabstract:in this paper we introduce inverse-foley animation a technique for optimizing rigid-body animations so that contact events are synchronized with input sound events a precomputed database of randomly sampled rigid-body contact events is used to build a contact-event graph which can be searched to determine a plausible sequence of contact events synchronized with the input sound039s events to more easily find motions with matching contact times we allow transitions between simulated contact events using a motion blending formulation based on modified contact impulses we fine tune synchronization by slightly retiming ballistic motions given a sound our system can synthesize synchronized motions using graphs built with hundreds of thousands of precomputed motions and millions of contact events our system is easy to use and has been used to plan motions for hundreds of sounds and dozens of rigid-body models

all rights to http:wwwmarkuskaysercom who unfortunately only uploaded the video to vimeo hence this upload you are welcomemaking something out of nothing using nothing renewable energy this just blew my mind away i do not own the video all the links are below:in a world increasingly concerned with questions of energy production and raw material shortages this project explores the potential of desert manufacturing where energy and material occur in abundancein this experiment sunlight and sand are used as raw energy and material to produce glass objects using a 3d printing process that combines natural energy and material with high-tech production technologysolar-sintering aims to raise questions about the future of manufacturing and triggers dreams of the full utilisation of the production potential of the world039s most efficient energy resource - the sun whilst not providing definitive answers this experiment aims to provide a point of departure for fresh thinkingsolar sinter project solar sinter projectlink to producers: http:wwwmarkuskaysercom
flexsense: a transparent self-sensing deformable surface

we present flexsense a new thin-film transparent sensing surface based on printed piezoelectric sensors which can reconstruct complex deformations without the need for any external sensing such as cameras flexsense provides a fully self-contained setup which improves mobility and is not affected from occlusions using only a sparse set of sensors printed on the periphery of the surface substrate we devise two new algorithms to fully reconstruct the complex deformations of the sheet using only these sparse sensor measurements an evaluation shows that both proposed algorithms are capable of reconstructing complex deformations accurately we demonstrate how flexsense can be used for a variety of 25d interactions including as a transparent cover for tablets where bending can be performed alongside touch to enable magic lens style effects layered input and mode switching as well as the ability to use our device as a high degree-of-freedom input controller for gaming and beyondhttp:researchmicrosoftcom
the combat in middle-earth: shadow of mordor is terrible

edit: this little splurge is a response to people complaining that i didn039t give a fair showcase of the combat system in my prior review found here - https:wwwyoutubecomwatchv=3lliqhs2ryea lot of people took issue with my last review when i claimed the combat system was simplistic then tried to call me out as a hypocrite when i ran from a stronghold fight at the end the reason i ran from the fight is because i didn039t want to spend 15-20 minutes mindlessly killing enemies i decided to revisit a stronghold for you and show you how ridiculous the combat in this game isif i would have used a lower-leveled account people would probably say quotwell you haven039t gotten to the berserkers yet the end-game is harderquot so i used a later level account though some people will probably try to say now that i039m using an over-leveled account keep in mind i039m not really using any special abilities executes are unlocked early on though the double-execute is a later ability i could repeat this exact same scenario on an earlier account it would simply take longer for the enemies to diei also kill enemies with my monitor turned offthe combat system in this game is terrible
redstone word processor computer in minecraft 1024 subscriber special

no command blocks used after almost 2 years working on this minecraft redstone word processor i finally have it finished well almostword processor that can load files from memory has uppercase lowercase numbers ampamp symbols not the fastest of word processors but every single bit of data comes through a single line of redstone i039ve also got plans to turn this into a working computer with an alu and cpu5x10 50 character limit monitor using 16 segment display there are 7357x1092 different combinations the screen can show all of which can be controlled from 1 lineworking on adding ram so that files can also be saved also need to add more symbols and well as command functions instead of using 1 to load file 1 i039ll make it ctrl 039l039 1 and ctrl 039n039 for new file and so onthanks to peter from planetminecraft for letting me use his and gate and rs-nor component be sure to check him out on and give him some diamonds :http:wwwplanetminecraftcommemberpeter-world download 17 compatible:https:wwwmediafirecomaadkq7a4smjqa66song: love on a starshiphttps:wwwyoutubecomwatchv=dhz7dnq7zjk
pteromys: interactive design and optimization of free-formed free-flight model airplanes

siggraph 2014http:www-uiissu-tokyoacjpumegliderdesign2014_siggraph_gliderdesignhtmlnobuyuki umetani yuki koyama ryan schmidt and takeo igarashi this paper introduces novel interactive techniques for designing original hand-launched free-flight glider airplanes which can actually fly the aerodynamic properties of a glider aircraft depend on their shape imposing significant design constraints we present a compact and efficient representation of glider aerodynamics that can be fit to real-world conditions using a data-driven method to do so we acquire a sample set of glider flight trajectories using a video camera and the system learns a nonlinear relationship between forces on the wing and wing shape our acquisition system is much simpler to construct than a wind tunnel but using it we can efficiently discover a wing model for simple gliding aircraft our resulting model can handle general free-form wing shapes and yet agrees sufficiently well with the acquired airplane flight trajectories based on this compact aerodynamics model we present a design tool in which the wing configuration created by a user is interactively optimized to maximize flight-ability to demonstrate the effectiveness of our tool for glider design by novice users we compare it with a traditional design workflow

space station 20th: longest continuous timelapse from space

since the very first module zarya launched from baikonur cosmodrome on 20 november 1998 the international space station has delivered a whole new perspective on this planet we call home join us as we celebrate 20 years of international collaboration and research for the benefit of earth with esa astronaut alexander gersts longest timelapse yet in just under 15 minutes this clip takes you from tunisia across beijing and through australia in two trips around the world you can follow the stations location using the map at the top right-hand-side of the screen alongside annotations on the photos themselves this timelapse comprises approximately 21 375 images of earth all captured by alexander from the international space station and shown 125 times faster than actual speed music is orbital horizons an original composition by los angeles-based musician matt piper participate in further space station celebrations via social media using hashtag spacestation20th download this video: http:

a hybrid hydrostatic transmission and human safe haptic telepresence robot

we present a new type of hydrostatic transmission that uses a hybrid air-water configuration analogous to n1 cable-tendon transmissions using n hydraulic lines and 1 pneumatic line for a system with n degrees of freedom dofs the common air-filled line preloads all dofs in the system allowing bidirectional operation of every joint this configuration achieves the high stiffness of a water-filled transmission with half the number of bulky hydraulic lines we implemented this transmission using pairs of rolling-diaphragm cylinders to form rotary hydraulic actuators with a new design achieving a 600-percent increase in specific work density per cycle these actuators were used to build a humanoid robot with two 4-dof arms connected via the hydrostatic transmission to an identical master stereo cameras mounted on a 2-dof servo-controlled neck stream live video to the operators head-mounted display which in turn sends the real-time attitude of the operators head to the neck servos in the robot the
