Bookmarked 560 weeks ago an oil drum barrel and a bit of metal pipe is all you need to make a really simple but effective pizza oven it may not look very fancy but it works well and it will cook a whole lot of pizza also instead of waiting for daysweeks for your clay oven to dry enough to use an earth oven can be made and used on the same day which is really handy if you have a few people coming roundplease like and share if you enjoyed this video : - a few notes on our oven first up thanks a million to maggie bill and michael who arrived from the us just in time to help build this oven they also did most of the filming for this - and michael made some excellent pizza dough too thanks guys you were greatthe soilearthstones are vital to keep the heat in but you could use sand clay or bricks too dont use bark mulch or anything similar as it will catch fire for sure on our oven the soil ended up being around 8 thick at the top which was good but more than was really needed we would have built the whole thing into a bank which would have saved a lot of work but there wasnt one handy i would suggest you aim for 6 minimumthe chimney pipe isnt essential the fire would burn anyway but it makes controlling the fire easier you need a hot oven which means a fast burning fire take it down or block it off when the fire is out to retain the heatfuel small section dry branches are best for a fast hot fire you dont want a smouldering cool fire so perhaps your very first job is to prep your fuel and leave it to dry somewhere we cut ours to length and left it in the greenhouse for a week only thin flat foods can be cooked at such high temperatures hence pizzas and flans as the oven cools you can try thicker breads and cakes and you could cook a casserole over night too on the day we made this video we were cooking for over an hour and the oven could have cooked for quite a while longerthe sandblocks inside and the soil outside were all damp so some heat was needed to dry them out before they could really heat up drying them first would have helped but obviously wasnt essential if we keep this oven covered then it will always be ready to jump into culinary actionyou dont need a wooden door you could just use the drum lid but timber is an insulator so it should keep more heat in also the weight of the soil squashed the barrel a bit so the lid didnt fit properly draughts are the worst try to keep it closed up really tight you could use bricks for a door too our wooded one was scorched black but a splash of water stopped it combustingif youre interested in the rounders game you might like to see last years matchhttps:wwwyoutubecomwatchv=8m_sjjvsk3y |

cord drill and pump drill
Bookmarked 535 weeks ago i made a cord drill and then upgraded it to a pump drill a cord drill is basically a spindle with a fly wheel attached so it looks like a spinning top the middle of a piece of cord is then put into a notch at the top of the spindle the ends of the cord are then wrapped around the spindle and then pulled quickly outwards causing the drill to spin the momentum of the fly wheel causes the cord to wrap back around the spindle in the other direction when it stops the cords are pulled outwards again and the drill spins in the other directioni made the first one with a stone flywheel then made fire with it in the same way i make fire with fire sticks then i made and fired some clay fly wheels made another drill with one of the fly wheels and fitted a stone drill bit to the end this one i use for drilling holes in wood i used the new drill to make a hole in a piece of wood i then put the spindle of the original cord drill through the hole in the wood tied the ends of the cord onto the piece of wood and it became a pump drill the cords were wrapped round the spindle as normal but now a pumping action of the wooden cross bar created the same actionthis was an interesting project for fire making i039d stick to fire sticks because the equipment is easier to make but for people with soft hands they could use the cord drill as it won039t give them blisters it should be added that the pump drill actually took longer than the cord drill cord: 32 seconds pump 1 min 30 seconds -the pump drill scene was edited down to make it watchable the pump drill had more moving parts and was constantly having problems as a fire making method i039d choose the cord drill over the pump drill unless all the parts were well made the main purpose i039d use these tool for is drilling holes rather than fire making it was reasonably good but the stone bits i made could be improved and their attachment to the shaft also needs some thought if the bit loosens and gets off axis slightly the whole thing wobbles these drills are impressive inventions and show potential for carpentry use latter on |
