Bookmarked 583 weeks ago bill nye the science guy returns to big think to discuss evolution this time from a canine point of view nye explains how dogs evolved out of an early human-wolf interaction which today benefits both species he also draws a comparison between dog breeds and the social construct of race claiming that both are man-made myths not steeped in science bill039s latest book is quotundeniable: evolution and the science of creationquotread more at bigthinkcom: http:googlo8urfollow big think here:youtube: http:googlcptsv5facebook: https:wwwfacebookcombigthinkdotcomtwitter: https:twittercombigthinktranscript: i love dogs as much as the next guy i talk to dogs in preparing this book i spoke with dogs at length maybe i spoke more to dogs than with them but theyre all dogs thats the thing i know we all love our kennel club show we all go there we obsess about whether our dog is a pug jack russell terrier mix with corgi overtones and an oaky finish an approachable little dog whatever theyre all dogs okay and so the idea of a purebred is just a human construct theres no such thing in a sense theres no such thing as a purebred dog and thats i dont have a problem with that thats the way it is by the way you talk to any veterinarian and theyll tell you that a mutt is a much healthier dog generally because they have this mix of genes theyre not inbred they havent made the same gene repeat too many times and so its funny its charming to me but theres a great lesson to be learned dogs are a descendent either from wolves or from one ancestor before wolves but what you and i think of as a modern wolf may or may not be the direct what led to a modern dogpeople talk about this as im writing the book in the next five years it will probably be resolved somebody will come up with a definitive answer to that but anyway apparently these experiments were done with foxes which are just the coolest thing where the foxes that were friendlier that they were more comfortable around people they were allowed to approach they were allowed to use human food after just three generations they had floppy scritchable ears and they were much more like dogs and it just shows you that dogs are almost certainly a result of a human wolf ancestor interaction as we became friends with them they became friends with us and we have a dependency thats charming its enriched both the dog lives and the human lives its really quite an insight and its a result of evolution the other lesson to be learned from dogs for me is since theyre all dogs its just if you have a dachshund and a great dane and they interact can we say interact on big think if they interact all you get is a dog you dont get any new thing new species you just get a dog in the same way if a papua new guinean hooks up with a swedish person all you get is a human theres no new thing youre going to get you just get a human japanese woman jumping the african guy all you get is a human theyre all humans so this is a lesson to be learned there really is for humankind theres really no such thing as race theres different tribes but not different races were all one speciesdirectedproduced by jonathan fowler elizabeth rodd and dillon fitton |

Bookmarked 523 weeks ago comics are free to write jokes about whatever they want and if they039ve done their homework any topic can be made funny political correctness discourages lazy joke writing says comic paul f tompkinsread more at bigthinkcom: http:bigthinkcomvideospaul-tompkins-on-political-correctness-in-comedyfollow big think here:youtube: http:googlcptsv5facebook: https:wwwfacebookcombigthinkdotcomtwitter: https:twittercombigthinktranscript - i think you can make jokes about anything but you have to accept that there will be people who dont like it and they are completely within their rights just as you are completely within your rights to say whatever you want to say theyre within their rights to react how theyre going to react so you cant be surprised or insulted if someone doesnt like a thing you said that is a you know youre making jokes on a controversial topic i think theres a lot of people who court that and they want that because its attention it gets more eyeballs on them and what theyre doing but theres some people who do feign outrage at this or theyre genuinely feeling like how dare you tell me what i can and cannot joke about but i would say in most cases audiences are not telling them you cant joke about this what theyre saying is that wasnt funny and thats a different thing i think you can talk about any topic and i think you can make any topic funny it depends on what your point is and where youre coming from audiences always know they always know and if you have a sound point that youre making and its well thought out and its well-crafted you can make me laugh at a thing that i think is tragic you can make me laugh at a thing that i think is horrific you can make me laugh at a thing that affects me personally but if youve done your homework and youve gone about it the right way it will still be funnybut its when people do i think a lazy job at something theyre not trying as hard as they could or they really are just courting outrage thats when audiences say that wasnt funny but i think its so rare its so rare that anyone says youre not allowed to joke about that tastes change over the years and so topics that were routinely joked about years ago that might affect certain people maybe its something that happened to someone and we throw a word around because its a shocking punchline and its good for a laugh but is it worth it and over time people who are tired of being ashamed because a thing happened to them they vote with their silence or they say thats not funny and i think that comedians have to recognize that humor evolves and times change and you cant stay stuck in the same place for too long because then youre irrelevant and so its very easy to say oh people are too uptight now theyre too uptight but the fact of the matter is these people are the people of today and you might be a person of yesterday if you cant adjust and you cant be in tune with what people think is funny anymore i dont think ive ever said anything where an audience turned on me in that way ive said things that now i wish i hadnt said because times have changed and like the me of 15-20 years ago made a joke that i wouldnt make today because i just because i look at the world differently now you know and because the world is different now and you know its all part of a maturation process i think for everybody and im of the school that says adapt or die you know and so if this is not a thing that we joke about anymore im going to find something else to joke about or im going to be better at handling these subjects so that people know what my intent is my intent is not to mock the victim here its not to mock the little person im ridiculing something that is worthy of ridicule and that every word out of my mouth is worth the same and just not to be cheap i think is a tiny thing but its kind of important |
