earth-cooled shipping container underground ca home for 30k

as a kid steve rees played in caves and learned how the earth could cool as an adult he buried two shipping containers and created an off-grid retirement home for himself and his wife shirleyafter a few years of camping on their 10 acre plot in northern california they bought two shipping containers hired an excavator and got to work doing most of the work themselves their finished home cost them 30000 solar included their 640-square-foot space cost them less than 50 per square foot rees explains that while this is less than conventional construction costs the savings only begin with construction with a solar-powered well a bit of propane and solar tubes for most of their light they havent had any city water or electric bills since 2002 winter temperatures in their home even during 20 degrees outside never fall below 62 degrees an rv catalytic heater is sufficient for heating even when the temperature rises to 110 outside in the summer their home has never risen above 82 degree
chimney and pots

i installed a fireplace and chimney in the tiled roof hut this is for for lighting and cooking heating is already taken care of by the underfloor heating system i knocked a hole in the back wall and made it from the same mud used to build the hut some left over roof tiles were used as a chimney capi made same pottery too clay was dug from the creek bank mixed with broken crushed tiles as grog and formed into a cooking pot and 4 large water pots i burnished them making them stronger and more water proof then i fired them in the tile kiln the kiln fired pottery was larger and stronger than my previous pit fired pots and also had a lower breakage rate with only one of the five pots breakingi used the water pots to carry water from the creek to irrigate a sweet potato patch behind the wattle and daub hut over the creek from the tile hut the cooking pot was used to boil creek water first in the kiln using it live an oven and then using pot boiling stones from the fire place wooden tongs were made and rocks were put in the fireplace till they glowed red hot the rocks were then put in the cold water in the pot it only took 4 rocks to boil the water violently this is probably the best method for sterilizing suspect water for drinking and could be done even without a pot even a puddle next to a creek could be boiled this way

sweet potato patch

i built a fenced enclosure and cultivated sweet potatoes from civilisation and yams from the wild in it i originally had a small 3x3 m garden behind the wattle and daub hut that already had some sweet potato and yam vines growing in it that were planted after the hut was built but wallabies kept eating the leaves so i made a wattle enclosure around it to keep them out wood ash was added to the soil to provide potassium and phosphorus for the growing tubers the previous small garden was organised in rows not seen in this video but this was hard to water during dry weather so i re-organised the patch into 1 meter wide mounds with pits in the centre vines were planted into the mounds and water poured into the centre of each mound watered the vines so then i had a small garden with 9 mounds contained within it i decided to enlarge the patch to fit in more mounds so i took out 2 sides of the fence and extended them by a meter each so the patch ended up being 4x4m and contained 16 mounds in addit

the weather channel - stole my video

it is pretty normal for websites to run stories on trending videos they usually learn about these from reddit of all places or from other websites that scooped the storythe weather channel contacted me about my coke vs molten lead video and wanted to get usage rights to edit and repost the video on their website i told them i would like them to just embed my video like all the other websites were doing this is much easier for all parties i don039t have to give them permission they don039t have to pay me and my youtube video gets all the views and i earn a little money still most importantly i don039t have to give out my personal information to them the weather channel would not let off and upped their offer to buy the video i looked over the form they sent me and i did not want to give them my personal information like social security number banking information etc for all i knew the person claiming to be from the weather channel could be trying to scam me again i told them to just embed my video they offered to send me the money through paypal i did accept that and after a couple of days i had neither heard back from them with a release form nor had been paid however they posted my video content before the deal was finalized and got my ok a day later after they promised me payment for it so here we go again the media thinking they are too big to abide by rules or laws and treating youtube like a lending library to desperately keep fresh content on their website
