121711 - sen john barrasso delivers weekly gop address on keystone xl pipeline
Bookmarked 742 weeks ago in the weekly republican address sen john barrasso of wyoming recently elected to be senate republican policy committee chairman discusses the importance of the keystone xl pipeline and urges president obama to stop stalling on the projectsen barrasso explains quotrepublicans are working on legislation that will make it easier and cheaper for the private sector to create jobs for all americans for example the creation of the keystone pipelinea shovel ready american energy project it will create as many as 20000 construction jobs and 100000 indirect jobs and it will strengthen our nation039s energy security keystone would allow us to transport 700000 barrels of oil a day from our northern neighbor canada to refineries in the united states having a steady source of energy from our friend and ally here would make us less dependent on energy from the volatile middle eastand that is good for america everyone from members of the united states chamber of commerce to members of labor unions support this projectquotunfortunately sen barrasso notes quotthe president has threatened to veto this bill because the pipeline is opposed by a number of extreme environmental groups these are the same groups who in the past have supported the president and he needs their support for his reelection it appears that president obama is opposing these new american jobs in order to try to save his own job it039s time for the president to stop playing politics after repeatedly saying 039we can039t wait039 for american job creation the president now wants americans to wait on the jobs from the pipeline until after next year039s electionquothe adds quotif the president successfully blocks these new jobs it will only add to his long list of bad economic decisions for our country while the president may have inherited a bad economy he has made it worse earlier this week in a 03960 minutes039 interview the president said that he has not overpromised his record shows otherwisequotsen barrasso concludes quotthe keystone pipeline is a real solution that president obama should embrace immediately to create new jobs across america the house of representatives has now passed the middle class tax relief and job creation bill this bill gives the president everything he has claimed to be for it extends payroll tax relief for hard working americans it helps those who are still looking for work and it is paid for by actually cutting government spending to get americans back to work small business owners need a level of predictability that they just don039t have with this president and this administration we need more from the white house than threats to veto a bill that would create 20000 jobs for americansquot |

3 reasons why the debt-ceiling debate is full of malarkey
Bookmarked 764 weeks ago all anybody in washington can talk about these days is the debt limit or debt ceiling -- the total amount of money the federal government is authorized to borrow at any given time after a decade in which spending increased by more than 60 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars and the debt limit was raised no fewer than 10 times the government is about to max out its 143 trillion credit line leading to fears that washington is going to default on its bonds stop cutting social security checks and destroy the economy more than it already has but the current debate over the debt ceiling is full of malarkey for at least three reasons 1 august 2 is a phony deadline treasury secretary timothy geithner has pushed back the drop-dead date when the us finally reaches its limit a bunch of times already: march 31 april 15 may 31 were all cited as deadlines before august 2 was inked in as armageddon but this time he means it man really 2 reaching the debt limit is not the same as defaulting on our debt -- which would indeed be catastrophic think about it: you can max out your credit cards but as long as you keep paying the minimum amount due each month your creditors don039t go crazy interest on the debt is a small fraction of total outlays and the government has a series of tools -- from using cash on hand to selling assets to scrimping on nonessential payments -- to make sure interest payments are made and seniors aren039t put on an all cat-food diet 3 legislating-by-panic is no way to run a country the reason we039re in this mess is because government can039t stop spending and the government can039t even pass a budget on a year039s notice but we039re expecting them to come up with a good plan for the country039s borrowing in a couple of weeks trying to force through an expansion of the country039s credit line by promising cuts in spending down the road is exactly why we039re in this situation to begin with it makes far more sense to do something like sell some tarp assets -- the government is sitting on 320 billion in outstanding direct loans and equities investments -- to cover interest payments through the end of the fiscal year then force congress and the president to come up with a budget that cuts spending -- and borrowing -- for real next year not is some distant futurefor more information check out nick gillespie039s 5 uncomfortable facts about the wonderful horrible debt-limit debate: http:reasoncomarchives20110708five-uncomfortable-facts-aboutand mercatus center039s jason j fichtner ampamp veronique de rugy039s the debt ceiling: what is at stake: http:mercatusorgsitesdefaultfilespublicationdebt20ceillingderugyfichtner42811pdfabout 235 minutesproduced by nick gillespie and meredith bragg edited by joshua swaingo to reasontv for downloadable versions and subscribe to reasontv039s youtube channel to receive automatic notifications when new material goes live |
