nasa at saturn: cassini039s grand finale

the final chapter in a remarkable mission of exploration and discovery cassini039s grand finale is in many ways like a brand new mission twenty-two times nasa039s cassini spacecraft will dive through the unexplored space between saturn and its rings what we learn from these ultra-close passes over the planet could be some of the most exciting revelations ever returned by the long-lived spacecraft this animated video tells the story of cassini039s final daring assignment and looks back at what the mission has accomplishedthe cassini mission is a cooperative project of nasa esa the european space agency and the italian space agency the jet propulsion laboratory a division of the california institute of technology in pasadena manages the mission for nasa039s science mission directorate washington for more information about cassini039s grand finale please visit https:saturnjplnasagovgrandfinale
spacex crs-7 launch

after seven successful missions to the international space station including six official resupply missions for nasa spacexs falcon 9 rocket and dragon spacecraft are set to liftoff from launch complex 40 at the cape canaveral air force station florida for their seventh official commercial resupply services crs mission to the orbiting lab liftoff is targeted for sunday june 28 2015 at 2:21pm utc if all goes as planned dragon will arrive at the station approximately two days after liftoff dragon is expected to return to earth approximately five weeks later for a parachute-assisted splashdown off the coast of southern california dragon is the only operational spacecraft capable of returning a significant amount of supplies back to earth including experiments the live launch webcast will begin here at approximately 2 pm utcpre-webcast music was created by edward rodriguez - https:soundcloudcomdjerod
pad abort test point of view

the pad abort test was the first key flight test of the crew dragon spacecraft a vehicle designed to carry astronauts to and from spacedragon traveled from 0-100 mph in 12 seconds reaching a max velocity of 345 mphthe test simulated how dragon would carry astronauts to safety if an emergency occurred on the launch pad crew dragons abort system is powered by eight superdraco engines which together produce 120000 pounds of axial thrust the engines are integrated directly into the sides of the vehicle rather than carried on top of the vehicle as with previous launch abort systems this configuration provides astronauts escape capability from the launch pad all the way to orbit and allows the spacecraft to use the same thrusters to land propulsively on land at the end of a mission for more information on the test see: http:wwwspacexcomnews20150506crew-dragon-completes-pad-abort-test

nasa the radiation belt storm probe

the radiation belt storm probe mission rbsp will explore the van allen radiation belts in the earth039s magnetosphere the charge particles in these regions can be hazardous to both spacecraft and astronauts project scientist david sibeck explains the how the mission will explore space weather -- changes in earth039s space environment caused by the sun -- that can disable satellites create power grid failures and disrupt gps service the mission also will allow researchers to understand fundamental radiation and particle acceleration processes throughout the universethe 2-year mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than 4:08 am thursday aug 23 from cape canaveral air force station in florida the twin probes will lift off on a united launch alliance atlas v rocket this video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto11069like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard
crew dragon in-flight escape demonstration recap

on sunday january 19 spacex successfully completed an in-flight test of crew dragons launch escape capabilities from launch complex 39a lc-39a at nasas kennedy space center in florida this test which did not have nasa astronauts onboard the spacecraft demonstrated crew dragons ability to reliably carry crew to safety in the unlikely event of an emergency on ascentfalcon 9 and dragon lifted off at 10:30 am est or 15:30 utc with the abort sequence initiating approximately one and a half minutes into flight crew dragon039s eight superdraco engines powered the spacecraft away from falcon 9 at speeds of over 400 mph following separation dragon039s trunk was released and the spacecraft039s parachutes were deployed first the two drogue parachutes followed by the four upgraded mark iii parachutes dragon safely splashed down in the atlantic ocean and teams successfully recovered the spacecraft onto spacex039s recovery vessel
flyby of jupiter from juno spacecraft 60fps

october 24 2017: nasas juno spacecraft has successfully completed its 8th science flyby of jupiter passing over the gas giants swirling cloud tops once again as it continues to unravel the mysteries of the largest planet in the solar system the 11 billion juno mission launched in august 2011 and arrived in orbit around jupiter on july 4 2016 since then the spacecraft has been studying the giant planet039s structure composition and magnetic and gravitational fields gathering data that mission scientists say should shed light on jupiter039s formation and evolutionjuno is in a highly elliptical orbit that brings it close to the planet once every 535 earth days the spacecraft collects most of its data during these close passes it has now completed eight of themjuno is scheduled to keep studying jupiter through july 2018 though the probe won039t necessarily cease operations then nasa could end up granting an extending mission

icymi: biometric wind converters act like hummingbirds

the links from todays post:https:wwwengadgetcom20170124icymi-biometric-wind-converters-act-like-hummingbirdstoday on in case you missed it: the dubai civil defence treated us to an impressive -- and fantastically dramatic -- video demonstrating its dolphin system which consists of a jetpack connected to a sea-doo water craft the jetpack uses water pressure to lift the wearer into the air to provide rescuers with better vantage points in emergency situations the system includes a thermal camera to aid in search and rescue missions but is largely intended for situations that occur near waterways and bridges meanwhile a tunisian company has taken inspiration from the tiny yet mighty hummingbird to create a new turbine design that relies on rotating fan blades to produce up to 1kw of electricity the biometric wind converter design uses carbon fiber wings that flap in a figure-8 motion that imitates a hummingbirds wing movements and is said to be both less noisy and less da
