monster prominence
Bookmarked 791 weeks ago when a rather large-sized m 36 class flare occurred near the edge of the sun it blew out a gorgeous waving mass of erupting plasma that swirled and twisted over a 90-minute period feb 24 2011 this event was captured in extreme ultraviolet light by nasa039s solar dynamics observatory spacecraft some of the material blew out into space and other portions fell back to the surface because sdo images are super-hd we can zoom in on the action and still see exquisite details and using a cadence of a frame taken every 24 seconds the sense of motion is by all appearances seamless sit back and enjoy the jaw-dropping solar show |

nasa sdo - venus approaching in 191 anstrom
Bookmarked 726 weeks ago this channel highlights the outer atmosphere of the sun -- called the corona -- as well as hot flare plasma hot active regions solar flares and coronal mass ejections will appear bright here the dark areas -- called coronal holes -- are places where very little radiation is emitted yet are the main source of solar wind particlescredit: nasa sdo |

huge explosion on the sun on june 7 2011
Bookmarked 778 weeks ago the sun let loose with an enormous explosion on the morning of june 7 2011 the entire eruption was captured by nasa039s solar dynamics observatory the animation here is from the ultraviolet camera colored orange to make it viewablehere039s my blog post with details and more video: http:blogsdiscovermagazinecombadastronomy20110607the-sun-lets-loose-a-huge-explosion |

nasa incandescent sun
Bookmarked 728 weeks ago this video takes sdo images and applies additional processing to enhance the structures visible while there is no scientific value to this processing it does result in a beautiful new way of looking at the sun the original frames are in the 171 angstrom wavelength of extreme ultraviolet this wavelength shows plasma in the solar atmosphere called the corona that is around 600000 kelvin the loops represent plasma held in place by magnetic fields they are concentrated in quotactive regionsquot where the magnetic fields are the strongest these active regions usually appear in visible light as sunspots the events in this video represent 24 hours of activity on september 25 2011this video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovvisa010000a010900a010990indexhtmllike our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard |

nasa sdo - filament eruption on december 6 2010
Bookmarked 804 weeks ago at approx 15:35 ut the large filament on the sun erupted in a beautiful display as seen here in this videothe location of the eruption and the magnetic field configuration at the place of the event suggest the impact on the earth will be limited more information will be available sooncredit: nasa sdo |

nasa sdo - venus and coronal loops
Bookmarked 726 weeks ago as we are almost halfway through the venus transit here is a look at venus through the nasa solar dynamics observatory aia instrument this is in 171 angstrom wavelength this channel is especially good at showing coronal loops - the arcs extending off of the sun where plasma moves along magnetic field lines the brightest spots seen here are locations where the magnetic field near the surface is exceptionally strongcredit: nasa sdo |

partial solar eclipse seen from space
Bookmarked 791 weeks ago nasa039s solar dynamics observatory caught the moon slipping in front of the face of the sun on march 4 2011 this view is in the far ultraviolet and shows lots of solar activity like sunspots which are bright in the uv and prominences the moon appears to change direction because sdo is orbiting the earth this is difficult to explain using just words so i have created a diagram on my blog it039s the same effect that makes planets seem to reverse direction over several days called quotretrograde motionquot or race cars seem to move left-to-right on the near side of the racetrack and right-to-left on the far sidecredit: nasamovie created using helioviewer: http:helioviewerorgdate=2011-03-04t14:59:56000zampampimagescale=24ampampimagelayers=sdoaiaaia3041100 |

nasa sdo - filament eruption august 31 2012
Bookmarked 713 weeks ago on august 31 2012 a filament collapsed in a spectacular way and i caught the action in dramatic detail in extreme ultraviolet light long filaments like this one have been known to collapse with explosive results when they hit the stellar surface below the segment in the 304 angstroms wavelength red sun covers almost 3 hours credit: nasa sdo |

tornado season on the sun
Bookmarked 741 weeks ago for a 30 hour spell feb 7-8 2012 the solar dynamics observatory captured plasma caught in a magnetic dance across the sun039s surface the results closely resemble extreme tornadic activity on earth |
