the scots at stirling: a history of britain england scotland battles amp scottish accents
Bookmarked 747 weeks ago http:wwwstirlingcastlegovuk title of video: the scots at stirling: a history of britain england scotland battles ampamp scottish accentsin may 2010 i collaborated with members of the edinburgh cine and video society traveling to stirling castle in scotland039s central belt as a volunteer for filming a series of live drama theatre renactments by historic scotland this video features the renacting segment on weapons of war where we used five cameras to cover the filming two static cameras to the left and right of the stage another at the back of the hall on the balcony a third to the side in a high alcove and the final camera roaming getting shows of the audience reactions the renacted event took place in stirling scotlandcrew:alasdair bryson jim close peter dick stewart emm alan taylorthe local history events run by historic scotland were to show visitors a taste of what life used to be like long ago the various weapons at war and styles of battle tactics and revealing the story of the highlanders and lowlanders fighting the english armystirling was still the central point of royal administration up until alexander039s death in 1286 where his passing triggered a crisis of the succession to the throne where king edward the 1st of england was invited to stirling however when he arrived he demanded that stirling as well as the other royal castles be made under his control edward had hoped that john balliol would act as a puppet figure for him but he refused his demands the year of stirling castle history 1296 came along and edward invaded scotland which began the wars of scottish independence which eventually lasted for 60 years the british english discovered stirling castle abandoned and empty and decided to set up to occupy it039s site despite this united kingdom scottish history of ages tells that only a year later they had to leave after sir andrew murray and william wallace039s victory at the battle of stirling bridge the stirling battle or stirling bridge battle many english deaths were suffered and the remaining men which retreated to the castle starved to death or surrendered to the scottish side a year following that in scotland history the english had control again after their victory at falkirk king edward fortified the castle for another battle stirling but it again was attacked by scottish forces in 1299 under the leader of robert bruce the english were unable to retrieve the garrison and were forced to surrender by the time 1303 came along the english again held the upper hand and stirling was the last remaining castle in scottish hands king edward039s army arrived in april of 1304 which included among his forces of 17 war weapons siege engines the scottish side under william oliphant were forced to surrender in july although he ordered them back into the castle so that he could try out his secret weapon war and weapons the warwolf a large trebucket siege weapon which effectively destroyed the castle039s gatehouse king edward had won a victory despite his death by 1307 robert bruce then became the king of scots and by 1313 only stirling bothwell and berwick castles were english occupied edward bruce brother of robert the bruce attacked stirling held by sir phillip mowbray who made a negotiation with edward where he would have to surrender the castle unless it were relived by 24th june bruce agreed to this and withdrew the following summer history of war tells that king edward 2nd marched northwards to try and save the castle and on the 23rd and 24th of june king robert039s forces met the english army at the battle of bannockburn well within the range of the castle the english were defeated and despite edward039s efforts to get inside the castle he failed and mombray keeping his word left the castle he handed over the castle and even joined the scottish side while doing so king robert ordered that the castle defences be rebuilt to their original strengththe fighting was not over yet as next came the second war of scottsh independence which saw the english in control by 1336 again while construction on the castle was still in progress andrew walker laid siege to the castle in 1337 making use of guns for the first time in scotland later in 1341-1342 robert steward the future to be king robert 2nd retook back stirling in a siege during 1341 -- 1342 the castle remained scottish until the end of the war in 1357 finally in 1360 robert de forsyth 2nd was given the role as governor of stirling castle which continued until todayit also hosts the city039s hogmanay celebrations the castle is open to the public year round and is a popular place for tourists to learn about the history of the world attracting over 35000 viewers a year famous scots have included braveheart wallaceedinburgh cine ampamp video society productionedit by alan andrew taylor of willow creek pictures |
