http:wwwwcptvbizin spring 2009 i had to source a work placement to complete a module for my hnd film ampamp television production course which i completed at jewel ampamp esk college in edinburgh scotland and eskbank between 2007 and 2009 i initially emailed local production companies offering a variety of skills but really offering my help for three days in an attempt to gain a placement for my placements module to gain work experience i was lucky enough to receive an invitation for shadowing the production team at the edinburgh scottish parliament where i was able to observe the filming and editing process of their weekly holyrood highlights package which airs on the united kingdom bbc on thursday lunchtimes my placement began with an introduction to the team where i was given a tour of the premises and from there on shadowed some of the key personnel while they undertook their daily routine one of the first areas was the main office where the production team work on the paperwork side of things such as writing questions for writing interviews and it operates as a main base for meeting up with people and is the main contact point for the production teamthe second area was the kit store which was located somewhere within the parliament here all of the kit required to produce a professional filmed programme is kept and maintained by an equipment technician furthermore they have a post production area where they use their final cut pro and avid systems i managed to sit in on one of the edits and watch some of the decissions made in cutting the footage down which included where to trim dialogue and how to record voiceover for use with the material shot and how to interview peoplethe british parliament scottish filming production team consisted of a camera operator and sound operator who moved around the parliament at various locations getting interviews with members of the scottish parliament and other important figures on the daily politics of the day i enjoyed this part where it was interesting to see the process of how the programme elements were filmedan additional observation opportunity was within their studio setup areas where the programme features a more in depth interview with a guest speaker where they can express their political views i was interested in how the audio was wired up for this production and also how the presenter has to prepare themselves for a take while the cameraman prepared himself for gaining the shots he neededthe highlight was of course being present in the scottish parliament chamber where most of the scottish parliament members debates about new political views take place from their various political parties the technical setup for that part of the programme is quite complicated several cameras are mounted high around the room and there are some sophisticated audio connections wired up to the desks where all of the msps sit so that they can tell the main speaker when they wish to talk i also got to watch a real politics interview being shot using a camera dolly on my shadow placement which was interesting to observe revealing political news throughout the entire placement i was given the opportunity to go around and film behind the scenes some of the work that goes into producing the programme i found this really invaluable as it provided me with a means of recording what i had learned and also to keep myself occupied between quiet periods where there wasn039t enough activity this is the only placement where i039ve done this but it paid off really well the programme called holyrood highlights is a political video produced by the broadcasting service of the scottish parliament which reports on recent developments and news tied with business in the parliament they have an online archive dating back to 2006 where lots of video content about politics daily can be viewed holyrood highlights is a studio format programme which is broadcast every thursday it contains members of scottish parliament discussing and debating political issues it can be viewed at 12:30pm online the scottish parliament is located in the holyrood area of edinburgh the capital of scotland uk the democratically elected body is made up of 129 members known as members of the scottish parliament also known as msps the first meeting of the new parliament took place on 12th may 1999 the regions making up the parliament include the highlands and islands north east scotland mid scotland and fife the west of scotland glasgow central scotland south of scotland and the lothians various parties make up the members of the parliament which include the political party the scottish national party the scottish labour party the scottish conservative party the scottish liberal democrats the scottish green party and independentsscottish video produced by alan taylor alan andrew taylor of willow creek pictures

http:wwwwcptvbiztitle of video: leith festivals gala day 2007: community parades marching bands ampamp tug of wari made this parade video during june 2007 when i made around ten videos based around local events which i enjoyed doing i stopped making these really as i couldn039t afford to take time off to cover them which is a shame make sure you see the parade parade produced by alan taylorformat: hi8 canon uci8length: 10:08the leith festival gala day community events take place every june as one of the events as part of the edinburgh leith festival on leith links the gala day includes a parade marching on making it039s way down leith walk and then onto leith links the gala day is packed with events featuring the local community these include live band acts stalls selling anything from arts and crafts antiques and food there will also be pony rides and the annual tug of war competition so come along to the gala gala a great event for children to watch the festival parades performers include samba samba dance and more samba music the edinburgh festival parade not to be confused with the festival cavalcade is a holidays parade or known as a park parade open to community groups from the different communities from leith now a little bit of british history about leith where the comedy festival gala festival takes place:leith has changed quite a bit since the late 1980s many of the industrial sites were developed the shore area of leith developed a number of upmarket restaurants the ocean terminal complex was constructed and the royal yacht britannia permanently moored in the docks which now attracts thousands of visitors every yearhere039s some history the earliest days of leith date back to the late 20th century but there were medieval findings dating back to the 12th century leith has played host to many significant events in scottish history mary of guise ruled scotland from leith in 1560 as regent mary queen of scots stayed in france that very year guise left her palace on the castlehill since the burning of holyroodhouse in the hertford raid of 1544 her now palace became what now is known as quality lane ukon leith links there is a large mound known locally as the giant039s brae believed to be a cannon emplacement for the siege the best documented day of the siege was 7th may 1560 when the english charged the walls of leith with ladders that eventually turned out to be too short mary guise has been said to have been delighted at the attack failurea century after that leith was a battleground when the army of the covenant lead by david leslie started a battle between the calton hill and leith to defend the northern approach to edinburgh againgst oliver cromwell039s forces under the command of general monck this rampart became known as edinburgh039s longest street leith walk after the victory at the battle of dunbar by cromwell in 1650 a fort known as leith citadel was built in 1656 unfortunately all that remains today is on dock street in 1457 golf and football was banned at the request of king james 2nd his choice was based on the sports being distractions from archery practise leith links played host to golf again in 1714 with the first competition for the 039edinburgh arrow039 by the royal company of archers the links even play as a site to an early five hole golf course built in the 18th century the docks at leith underwent decline in the post second world war period where the area was known for roughness and prostitution leith plays host to the scottish government next to ocean terminal in 2003 leith was the location chosen for the mtv europe music awards leith was made a parliamentary burgh jointly with portobello and musselburgh in the united kingdom leith over the years relied on it039s striving industries:the leith glassworks stood on baltic street and dated from 1746 leith specialised in wine bottles for export to france and spain at it039s peak one million bottles were being made per week soap was an additional item produced in leith the anchor soapworks were established on water street around 1680 this used whale oil in it039s production which survived until around 1830 wine and whisky storage in leith dates from at least the early 16th century at it039s peak there were eighty five warehouses in the 1960039s the last one closed around 1995 lime juice was around in the 1960039s and focussed on providing people their vitamin c ship building although around was limited by the depth of the water leith specialised in odd ship types tugs hotel ships and cable layers lead was created in one of scotland039s largest leadworks standing on the corner of mitchell street and constitution streetvideo produced by alan andrew taylor of willow creek pictures
