pinoky: a ring that animates your plush toys

pinoky is a wireless ring-like device that can be externally attached to any plush toy as an accessory that animates the toy such as by moving its limbs a user is thus able to instantly convert any plush toy into a soft robot the user can control the toy remotely or input the movement desired by moving the plush toy and having the data recorded and played back unlike other methods for animating plush toys pinoky is non-intrusive so alterations to the toy are not required in a user study 1 the roles of plush toys in the participants039 daily lives were examined 2 how the participants played with plush toys without pinoky was observed 3 how they played with plush toys with the device was observed and their reactions to the device were surveyed on the basis of the results potential applications were conceptualized to illustrate the utility of pinoky jst erato igarashi design interface project: http:wwwdesigninterfacejpengraduate school of media design keio university: http:wwwkmdkeioacjpenyuta sugiura calista lee anusha withana yasutoshi makino masahiko inami and takeo igarashi 2011 pinoky: a ring that animates your plush toys in siggraph asia 2011 emerging technologies sa 03911 acm new york ny usa article 14 1 pages doi=http:doiacmorg10114520733702073383

darpa039s soft robot: now you see it now you don039t

harvard university researchers working under darpa039s maximum mobility and manipulation m3 program recently demonstrated the ability to manufacture low-cost silicone robots with microfluidic channels that allow for air and fluids to be pumped in to control movement color and temperaturein this video a soft robot walks onto a bed of rocks and is filled with fluid to match the color of the rocks and break up the robot039s shape the robot moves at a speed of approximately 40 meters per hour absent the colored fluid it can move at approximately 67 meters per hour future research will be directed at smoothing the movements however speed is less important than the robot039s flexibility soft robots are useful because they are resilient and can maneuver through very constrained spaces for this demonstration the researchers used tethers to attach the control system and to pump pressurized gases and liquids into the robot tethered operation reduces the size and weight of such robots by leaving power sources and pumps off-board but future prototypes could incorporate that equipment in a self-contained system at a pumping rate of 225 ml per minute color change in the robot required 30 seconds once filled the color layers require no power to sustain the colorfor additional information on darpa039s robotics programs see: http:gousagovuel this video has been sped up the actual duration is 2m 27s

autonomous robotic truss reconfiguration and manipulation

learn more: http:creativemachinescornelledumachine-metabolismhttp:wwwjeremyblumcomportfoliomachine-metabolismaccepted for publication in ieee robotics and automation magazinerobot shown developed by franz nigl and jeremy blum under the direction of dr hod lipsonthis video presents a robot capable of autonomously traversing and manipulating a 3d truss structure the robot is able to approach and traverse multiple structural joints using a combination of translational and rotational motions a key factor in allowing reliable motion and engagements is the use of specially designed structural building blocks comprised of bidirectional geared rods a set of traversal plans each comprised of basic motion primitives were analyzed for speed robustness and repeatability paths covering eight joints are demonstrated as well as automatic element assembly and disassembly we suggest that the robot architecture and truss module design such as the one presented here could open the door to robotically assembled maintained and reconfigured structures that would ordinarily be difficult risky or time consuming for humans to construct
