Bookmarked 708 weeks ago in episode 63 of microbeworld video dr stan maloy talks with forest rohwer phd professor of biology san diego state university about his research on the microbes of the ocean coral reefs and the human lung this episode was filmed at the american association for the advancement of science meeting in vancouver canada on february 18th 2012viruses make up a large portion of the world039s oceans with over ten million per milliliter of seawater rohwer039s interest in better understanding these viruses led him to becoming an expert in marine virology and a founder of the field of viral metagenomics forest discovered that these viruses are very good at controlling the number and type of bacteria in the ocean and through the process of gene transfer possess the potential to change marine bacteria into human pathogens among forest039s other interests are coral reefs he has studied the link between humans inhabiting the land around coral reefs and the decaying health of the corresponding coral forest also studies cystic fibrosis a disease of the human lung which mimics what he sees going on with the health of coral reefs rohwer explains how his work across many different scientific disciplines has helped his research interests broaden while leading to new discoveries unlikely to have been made without the knowledge and tools of other scientific fields |

Bookmarked 349 weeks ago climate change is destroying the great barrier reef in the last 2 years the great barrier reef has lost over half its coral at the current rate at which sea temperatures are rising the reef will go extinct in the next 20 to 30 years i have witnessed this happening first hand over the last two years dive sites i previously loved now stand bleached and destroyed if we don039t act now global warming will consume the great barrier reef and destroy one of the seven natural wonders of the world it is not too late to act greenpeace are actively fighting groups who continue to place this natural wonder at risk the continued opening of coal mines such as the adani mine are only exacerbating this issue and sealing the fate of the great barrier reef to assist their cause visit https:wwwgreenpeaceorgauwhat-we-dopreserving-great-barrier-reef for more information and consider lending your support either donations or signing their petition are both very appreciated even small things like educating |

Bookmarked 624 weeks ago for licensingusage please contact licensingjukinmediacom caribbean reef shark encounter in the western caribbean sea we were lion fish culling when the shark came out of no ware it scared the crap out of me filmed on my gopro 3 camera we were in about 70039 of water when the shark encounter occurredthe cayman islands is where i learned to dive and one of the best dive locations in the world i would strongly recommend that anyone take a vacation here to enjoy the beauty of its reefs you will see amazing animals everywhere i especially recommend night diving i love this place and will continue diving here for the rest of my life in no way did this encounter discourage me from getting back into the wateri want to make it clear that i am hunting lion fish to help protect the reef from the destruction that they cause the shark was acting in his natural environment i have no ill will toward him and will get back in the water and continue to protect the reef for future generations i would strongly encourage anyone out there to donate to reeforg or other organizations to help protect our reefs sharks and the beautiful creatures in themfor licensingusage please contact licensingjukinmediacom |
