public lectureparticle accelerator on a chip

lecture date: tuesday may 24 2011 accelerators are huge expensive tubes sometimes miles long that produce high energies for smashing protons or making intense x-ray light 21st-century technology has taken us from the room-sized eniac to microprocessors that fit in your pocket can the same be done for particle accelerators fiber optics or silicon crystals could be used to build particle pathways with high-power lasers as the driver in this lecture christopher mcguinness shows how scientists are using nanotech fabrication techniques at slac to build an accelerator on a chip lecturer: christopher mcguinness slac national accelerator laboratory

ferrofluid sculpture

ferrofluid sculpturea steel sculpture with changing magnetisation is coated with ferrofluid the fluid is pulled in the direction of increasing flux density and forms peaks which become smaller in higher flux density at an accumulation of fluid at ridges the flux density at the surface decreases the flow and the distribution of the fluid can be observed at several characteristic locations the centre part of the sculpture is a conical spiral that has one three or even more tracks of peaks depending on the magnetisation further tracks are built at the crown and at the ridge of the central hexagon the crown has horizontal cavities that discontinue the gradient of flux density on the way to the top the fluid is accumulated until the cavities are bridged by fountains on the way back the fluid falls in large drops over the gap the horizontal cavity at the ridge of the hexagon remains filled at the retreat with increasing magnetisation the fluid at the ridge rises steeply as the flux density on the hexagon is slightly higher than at the other side of the cavity one can also just enjoy looking at the movements of the object ------------------------ferrofluid figureine stahlplastik wird bei zunehmender magnetisierung von magnetischer flssigkeit berzogen die flssigkeit wird dabei jeweils in richtung der zunehmenden feldstrke gezogen und bildet dabei spitzen die umso kleiner sind je hher die feldstrke ist bei der anhufung von flssigkeit an kanten nimmt dabei die feldstrke an der oberflche ab beim fluss und bei der verteilung der flssigkeit zeigen sich einige charakteristische stellen der mittelteil besteht aus einer konischen spirale die je nach magnetisierung eine drei oder sogar mehr spuren von spitzen aufweist weitere spuren werden an den zhnen der krone und an der kante des zentralen sechsecks gebildet die krone enthlt horizontale vertiefungen die den kontinuierlichen gradienten des feldes unterbrechen auf dem weg nach oben werden die vertiefungen nach dem anstauen von flssigkeit in fontnen bersprungen auf dem rckweg fllt die flssigkeit in groen tropfen ber den spalt der waagerechte graben an der sechseckkante bleibt beim rckzug mit flssigkeit gefllt bei wieder ansteigender magnetisierung erhebt sich diese flssigkeit dann sehr steil auf der kante des sechsecks dessen magnetisierung geringfgig strker ist als die auf der anderen seite des grabens dabei sieht das ganze auch einfach ganz nett aus

motion in a straight line: crash course physics 1

in this the first episode of crash course physics your host dr shini somara introduces us to the ideas of motion in a straight line she talks about displacement acceleration time velocity and the definition of acceleration also how does a physicist discuss speed as opposed to a police officer and did you deserve that ticket you can figure it all out with the help of physics --pbs digital studios wants to get to know you better if you have 10 minutes to spare by filling out a survey you039ll be doing us a huge favor and have a chance to win an awesome pbs digital studios shirthttps:wwwsurveymonkeycomrpbsds2016--produced in collaboration with pbs digital studios: http:youtubecompbsdigitalstudios--want to find crash course elsewhere on the internetfacebook - http:wwwfacebookcomyoutubecrashctwitter - http:wwwtwittercomthecrashcoursetumblr - http:thecrashcoursetumblrcom support crashcourse on patreon: http:wwwpatreoncomcrashcoursecc kids: http:wwwyoutubecomcrashcoursekidscrash course is on patreon you can support us directly by signing up at http:wwwpatreoncomcrashcoursethanks to the following patrons for their generous monthly contributions that help keep crash course free for everyone forever:mark eric kitchen jessica wode jeffrey thompson steve marshall moritz schmidt robert kunz tim curwick jason a saslow sr foxley elliot beter jacob ash christian jan schmid jirat christy huddleston daniel baulig chris peters anna-ester volozh ian dundore caleb weeks
