the 1936 olympic games in berlin will probably be best remember for being held in nazi germany it was the second time in history that women were invited to participate in gymnastics and the first time the usa sent a women039s gymnastics olympic team gymnasts were only allowed to participate as teams the events were bars horse and beam and gymnasts also performed with rings bows or clubs and exercises were up to 5 minutes long you can recognize some of the modern artistic gymnastics elements in the old gymnastics exercises from 1936 such as the balance beamgermany won the 1936 olympics gymnastics women team competition you can see some of the german gymnasts on this video montage which is taken from the footage shot by leni riefenstahl for the movie olympia a propaganda film for the nazis who wanted to use the berlin 1936 olympics as a demonstration of aryan supremacy you can see how the german gymnasts are shot from the ground up giving them an imposing look and intentionally proje
