nasa sdo lunar transit prominence eruption and m-class flare
Bookmarked 631 weeks ago on jan 30 2014 beginning at 8:31 am est the moon moved between nasa039s solar dynamics observatory or sdo and the sun giving the observatory a view of a partial solar eclipse from space such a lunar transit happens two to three times each year this one lasted two and one half hours which is the longest ever recorded when the next one will occur is as of yet unknown due to planned adjustments in sdo039s orbitnote in the pictures how crisp the horizon is on the moon a reflection of the fact that the moon has no atmosphere around it to distort the light from the sunthe sun emitted a mid-level solar flare peaking at 11:11 am est on jan 30 2014 images of the flare were captured by nasa039s solar dynamics observatory or sdo shortly after the observatory witnessed a lunar transit the black disk of the moon can be seen in the lower right of the imagesthe movie shows the sun moving quite a bit because sdo has a hard time keeping the sun centered in the image during a transit because the moon blocks so much light the fine guidance systems on the sdo instruments need to see the whole sun in order keep the images centered from exposure to exposure once the transit was over the fine guidance systems started back up once again providing steady images of the sun this video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto11463like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard |

nasa sdo039s ultra-high definition view of 2012 venus transit
Bookmarked 718 weeks ago launched on feb 11 2010 the solar dynamics observatory or sdo is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun during its five-year mission it will examine the sun039s atmosphere magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in earth039s atmospheric chemistry and climate sdo provides images with resolution 8 times better than high-definition television and returns more than a terabyte of data each dayon june 5 2012 sdo collected images of the rarest predictable solar event--the transit of venus across the face of the sun this event happens in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years the last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117the videos and images displayed here are constructed from several wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light and a portion of the visible spectrum the red colored sun is the 304 angstrom ultraviolet the golden colored sun is 171 angstrom the magenta sun is 1700 angstrom and the orange sun is filtered visible light 304 and 171 show the atmosphere of the sun which does not appear in the visible part of the spectrumthis video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovvisa010000a010900a010996indexhtmllike our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddardfollow the conversation online with venustransit |

haarp and earthquakes
Bookmarked 781 weeks ago the united states has three ionospheric heating facilities: the haarp the hipas near fairbanks alaska and currently offline for modifications one at the arecibo observatory in puerto rico the european incoherent scatter scientific association eiscat operates an ionospheric heating facility capable of transmitting over 1 gw 1000000000 watts effective radiated power erp near troms in norway russia has the sura ionospheric heating facility in vasilsursk near nizhniy novgorod capable of transmitting 190 mw erpanother site operated by military sub-contractor under unknown arrangement between the us and canadian government is located near cape race newfoundland canada at n46 38649039 w53 9010039 there is minimal or no grid power available at this site so this may be a passive listening post for the transmissions emitted by other haarp sitesin august 2002 further support for those critical of haarp technology came from the state duma parliament of russia the duma published a critical report on the haarp written by the international affairs and defense committees signed by 90 deputies and presented to then president vladimir putin the report claimed that quotthe us is creating new integral geophysical weapons that may influence the near-earth medium with high-frequency radio waves the significance of this qualitative leap could be compared to the transition from cold steel to firearms or from conventional weapons to nuclear weapons this new type of weapons differs from previous types in that the near-earth medium becomes at once an object of direct influence and its componentquot however given the timing of the russian intervention it is possible that it was related to a controversy at the time concerning the us withdrawal in june 2002 from the russian-american anti-ballistic missile treaty this high level concern is paralleled in the april 1997 statement by the us secretary of defense over the power of such electromagnetic weaponry russia owns and operates an ionospheric heater system as powerful as the haarp called 039sura039 which is located roughly 150 km from the city of nizhny novgorodthe objectives of the haarp project became the subject of controversy in the mid-1990s following claims that the antennas could be used as a weapon a small group of american physicists aired complaints in scientific journals such as physics and society charging that the haarp could be seeking ways to destroy or disable enemy spacecraft or disrupt communications over large portions of the planet the physicist critics of the haarp have had little complaint about the project039s current stage but have expressed fears that it could in the future be expanded into an experimental weapon especially given that its funding comes from the office of naval research and the air force research laboratorythese concerns were amplified by bernard eastlund a physicist who developed some of the concepts behind the haarp in the 1980s and proposed using high-frequency radio waves to beam large amounts of power into the ionosphere energizing its electrons and ions in order to disable incoming missiles and knock out enemy satellite communications the us military became interested in the idea as an alternative to the laser-based strategic defense initiative however eastlund039s ideas were eventually dropped as sdi itself mutated into the more limited national missile defense of today the contractors selected to build haarp have denied that any of eastlund039s patents were used in the development of the projectafter the physicists raised early concerns the controversy was stoked by local activism in september 1995 a book entitled angels don039t play this haarp: advances in tesla technology by the former teacher nick begich jr son of the late congressman nick begich d-ak and brother of us senator mark begich d-ak claimed that the project in its present stage could be used for quotgeophysical warfare |
