short video paying tribute to the men who lost their lives during the falklands war in the form of a beating retreat event that took place at edinburgh castle subscribe to my channel: http:wwwyoutubecomsubscription_centeradd_user=blueorcadigitalwatch this video and more in the 039my videos039 playlist: http:wwwyoutubecomplaylistlist=pluvav2fgllwcqplcwmb_tmcpgagyf8au9edinburgh castle beating retreat video credits:camera operatoreditordistributor: alan taylor -- wwwyoutubecomuserblueorcadgitalvisit my channel for more videos: http:wwwyoutubecomuserblueorcadigitalsubscribe to receive new videos in your feed: http:wwwyoutubecomsubscription_centeradd_user=blueorcadigitalevery year on scotland039s edinburgh castle039s esplanade a scottish beating retreat takes place usually involving many civilian pipe bands and brass bands in 2007 there was a special remembrance memorial to the falklands war which although i hadn039t been born at that time i decided to out this rememberances video together as a reminder of the day of rememberance events here is some background information on the story of the war falklandshistory of the falklands conflict:by late march 1981 argentina had been in the middle of a devastating economic crisis where there was large scale rioting against the military junta that had been governing the country since 1976 in december 1981 there was an additional change where a new junta was formed under general leopoldo galtieri who acted as president brigadier basilio lami dozo and admiral jorge anaya were main supporters for a military solution to claim the islands predicting that the united kingdom would not get involved militarily their aim was to make use of argentine039s long lasting patriotic feelings towards the islands to prevent them from concerning themselves with the economic problems and the regime039s continuing human rights violations according to sources the newspaper la presna speculated in a step by step process starting with cutting off supplies to the islands which came to an end with direct actions at the end of 1982 on condition if the un talks were not going to their favor the ongoing tension between the two countries over the islands grew larger on the 19th march when a group of hired argentine merchants raised their argentine flag at south georgia which in hindsight was the first offensive action in the war the junta of the argentine military thought that the uk would reinforce it039s south atlantic forces but instead they ordered the invasion of the falklands islandsbritain was initially caught by surprise by the argentine attack on the south atlantic islands despite continuous warnings from royal navy captain nicholas barker and others he revealed his intentions to defence secretary john nott039s 1981 review to withdraw navy warships hms endurance from the south atlantic as he felt it sent a message to the argentines that britain was unwilling and unable to defend it039s territories in the falklandsthe falklands war started on friday 2nd april 1982 britain launched a naval task force to engage the argentine navy and airforce to retake the islands by sea assault the conflict came to an end on 14th june 1982 where the islands remained under british control in total it lasted seventy four days and sadly resulted in the deaths of 257 british and 649 argentine soldiers sailors as well as airmen not forgetting 3 civilian falklandersin the aftermath of the falklands war the current prime minister margaret thatcher won the public039s support she needed for economic measures tackling head on inflation despite the amount of unemployment she created she did however create national pride with confidence in the armed forces the royal navy had proved to be worth it039s value along with the the falkland war campaign being described as a success for helping polls for the conservatives a terrible statement considering the many lives lost during the war at the time proposed cuts to the royal navy were canceled the islanders experienced full british citizenship in 1983 where their lifestyles improved the war had a knock on effect for preventing a future potential war with chilie and also with the return of democracy with the first free general elections since 1973 the war had a major social impact changing the image of the military from one of reserve to a nation that is prepared to defend itselfthis event held at edinburgh castle on the 19th may 2007 in rememberance of the conflict includes the edinburgh postal pipe band dancers and the british legion uk bagpipe band a british charity from the british legion club beating retreat is a term originally known as the watch setting which takes place at sunset by firing a single round of an evening gun alan andrew taylor 2007 -- licensed under creative commons 30 share alike non commercial use
