nasa september 10 2014 x16 flare

the sun emitted a significant solar flare peaking at 1:48 pm edt on sept 10 2014 nasa039s solar dynamics observatory captured images of the event solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through earth039s atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where gps and communications signals travelthis flare is classified as an x16 class flare quotx-classquot denotes the most intense flares while the number provides more information about its strength an x2 is twice as intense as an x1 an x3 is three times as intense etchis video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto11651like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard

partial solar eclipse seen from space

nasa039s solar dynamics observatory caught the moon slipping in front of the face of the sun on march 4 2011 this view is in the far ultraviolet and shows lots of solar activity like sunspots which are bright in the uv and prominences the moon appears to change direction because sdo is orbiting the earth this is difficult to explain using just words so i have created a diagram on my blog it039s the same effect that makes planets seem to reverse direction over several days called quotretrograde motionquot or race cars seem to move left-to-right on the near side of the racetrack and right-to-left on the far sidecredit: nasamovie created using helioviewer: http:helioviewerorgdate=2011-03-04t14:59:56000zampampimagescale=24ampampimagelayers=sdoaiaaia3041100

nasa colliding neutron stars create black hole and gamma-ray burst

armed with state-of-the-art supercomputer models scientists have shown that colliding neutron stars can produce the energetic jet required for a gamma-ray burst earlier simulations demonstrated that mergers could make black holes others had shown that the high-speed particle jets needed to make a gamma-ray burst would continue if placed in the swirling wreckage of a recent mergernow the simulations reveal the middle step of the process--how the merging stars039 magnetic field organizes itself into outwardly directed components capable of forming a jet the damiana supercomputer at germany039s max planck institute for gravitational physics needed six weeks to reveal the details of a process that unfolds in just 35 thousandths of a second--less than the blink of an eyethis video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto10740like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard
ascent - commemorating shuttle

photographic documentation of a space shuttle launch plays a critical role in the engineering analysis and evaluation process that takes place during each and every mission motion and still images enable shuttle engineers to visually identify off-nominal events and conditions requiring corrective action to ensure mission safety and success this imagery also provides highly inspirational and educational insight to those outside the nasa familythis compilation of film and video presents the best of the best ground-based shuttle motion imagery from sts-114 sts-117 and sts-124 missions rendered in the highest definition possible this production is a tribute to the dozens of men and women of the shuttle imaging team and the 30yrs of achievement of the space shuttle programthe video was produced by matt melis at the glenn research center

massive crater discovered under greenland ice

in a remote area of northwest greenland an international team of scientists has made a stunning discovery buried beneath a kilometer of ice its a meteor impact crater 300 meters deep and bigger than paris or the beltway around washington dc it is one of the 25 largest known impact craters on earth and the first found under any of our planets ice sheets the researchers first spotted the crater in july 2015 while they were inspecting a new map of the topography beneath greenland039s ice sheet that used ice-penetrating radar data primarily from operation icebridge an ongoing nasa airborne mission to track changes in polar ice and earlier nasa airborne missions in greenland read more: https:gonasagov2rskn1uthis video is public domain and along with other supporting visualizations can be downloaded from the scientific visualization studio at: http:svsgsfcnasagov12941credit: nasa039s goddard space flight centerjefferson beckfootage and co-production courtesy of the nation

nasa the radiation belt storm probe

the radiation belt storm probe mission rbsp will explore the van allen radiation belts in the earth039s magnetosphere the charge particles in these regions can be hazardous to both spacecraft and astronauts project scientist david sibeck explains the how the mission will explore space weather -- changes in earth039s space environment caused by the sun -- that can disable satellites create power grid failures and disrupt gps service the mission also will allow researchers to understand fundamental radiation and particle acceleration processes throughout the universethe 2-year mission is scheduled to launch no earlier than 4:08 am thursday aug 23 from cape canaveral air force station in florida the twin probes will lift off on a united launch alliance atlas v rocket this video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto11069like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard

nasa terrestrial gamma-ray flashes create antimatter

nasa039s fermi gamma-ray space telescope has detected beams of antimatter launched by thunderstorms acting like enormous particle accelerators the storms can emit gamma-ray flashes called tgfs and high-energy electrons and positrons scientists now think that most tgfs produce particle beams and antimatterthis video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto10706like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard
