el nio is back here039s how it works
Bookmarked 527 weeks ago and how it got its namesubscribe to our channel http:googl0bsajoel nio is a weather phenomenon that occurs irregularly in the eastern tropical pacific every two to seven years when the trade winds that usually blow from east to west weaken sea surface temperatures start rising setting off a chain of atmospheric impactsel nios can be strong or weak strong events cantemporarily disrupt weather patterns around the world typically making certain regions wetter peru or california say and others drier southeast asia some countries suffer major damage as a resultel nios also transfer heat stored in the deeper layers of the ocean to the surface when combined with global warming that can lead to record hot years as in 1998countries across the globe will have to brace themselves as this event peaks this winter and lasts through the springel nio has already triggered longer droughts in indonesia enabling massive man-made peatland fires to rage out of control creating toxic haze that has spread as far as singapore warmer ocean temperatures have also caused a major coral bleaching event harming reefs around the worldvoxcom is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what039s really driving the events in the headlines check out http:wwwvoxcom to get up to speed on everything from kurdistan to the kim kardashian app check out our full video catalog: http:googlizonyefollow vox on twitter: http:googlxfrz5hor on facebook: http:googlu2g06o |

computational hydrographic printing siggraph 2015
Bookmarked 558 weeks ago by yizhong zhang chunji yin changxi zheng and kun zhoutechnical paper at acm siggraph 2015abstract:hydrographic printing is a well-known technique in industry for transferring color inks on a thin film to the surface of a manufactured 3d object it enables high-quality coloring of object surfaces and works with a wide range of materials but suffers from the inability to accurately register color texture to complex surface geometries thus it is hardly usable by ordinary users with customized shapes and textureswe present computational hydrographic printing a new method that inherits the versatility of traditional hydrographic printing while also enabling precise alignment of surface textures to possibly complex 3d surfaces in particular we propose the first computational model for simulating hydrographic printing pro- cess this simulation enables us to compute a color image to feed into our hydrographic system for precise texture registration we then build a physical hydrographic system upon off-the-shelf hardware integrating virtual simulation object calibration and controlled immersion to overcome the difficulty of handling complex surfaces we further extend our method to enable multiple immersions each with a different object orientation so the combined colors of individual immersions form a desired texture on the object surface we validate the accuracy of our computational model through physical experiments and demonstrate the efficacy and robustness of our system using a variety of objects with complex surface textures |

how deep is the ocean reallydepth of sea
Bookmarked 507 weeks ago the deep sea or deep layer is the lowest layer in the ocean existing below the thermocline and above the seabed at a depth of 1000 fathoms 1800 m or more little or no light penetrates this part of the ocean and most of the organisms that live there rely for subsistence on falling organic matter produced in the photic zone for this reason scientists once assumed that life would be sparse in the deep ocean but virtually every probe has revealed that on the contrary life is abundant in the deep oceanin 1960 the bathyscaphe trieste descended to the bottom of the mariana trench near guam at 35798 feet or 677 miles 10911 meters the deepest known spot in any ocean if mount everest 8848 metres were submerged there its peak would be more than a mile beneath the surface the trieste was retired and for a while the japanese remote-operated vehicle rov kaik was the only vessel capable of reaching this depth it was lost at sea in 2003 in may and june 2009 the hybrid-rov hrov nereus returned |

why were there missing rungs on the lunar landers ladder
Bookmarked 339 weeks ago something about the apollo missions always confused me sure the step off of the lunar landers 91 cm footpad was a small step but the step just before that was actually enormous im talking about this the huge gap between the last rung on the ladder and the ground why on the moon is that gap so huge isnt it dangerous to require an astronaut to jump down onto the surface and jump back upthe lunar landers ladder had nine rungs all spaced 228 cm 9 apart but the gap between the last rung and the ground was about three times that at a whopping 76 cm 30 so really the ladder wasnt missing one rung it was missing twoi mean sure the gravitys only 16th that of earths but wouldnt it have been so much safer if there was even one more rung to close that gap up a little so today were going to look into why nasa and the lunar landers manufacturer grumman chose a ladder of this length well talk about design considerations of the hardware the unknown cond |

running on ice viralhog
Bookmarked 368 weeks ago occurred on december 10 2018 kangasala finlandquotthe lake is called ukkijrvi which means grandpa lake and is located in the center of kangasala city near tampere finland ukkijrvi is a real small lake 450 meters by 150 meters it was possible to have this kind of conditions which are rare even here in finland because of the small size of the lake every year we wish to have clear ice without snow to get good surface for ice skating this year wasnt typical at all we had a long fall season without snow the cold weather and heavy snowfall didnt start immediately thats why this small lake got chillier and froze sooner than bigger ones after few very cold nights the ice on the lake was over 10 cm thick when bigger lakes still had open waterwe had been ice skating already for few days when temperature got warm again ice was still thick enough to carry a man but after some rain there was also a couple of millimeters of water on it from the balcony of our house we got just the right |

understanding the magnetic sun
Bookmarked 520 weeks ago nasa gsfc solar scientist holly gilbert explains a computer model of the suns magnetic fieldgrasping what drives that magnetic system is crucial for understanding the nature of space throughout the solar system: the sun039s invisible magnetic field is responsible for everything from the solar explosions that cause space weather on earth such as auroras to the interplanetary magnetic field and radiation through which our spacecraft journeying around the solar system must travel we can observe the shape of the magnetic fields above the sun039s surface because they guide the motion of that plasma the loops and towers of material in the corona glow brightly in euv images additionally the footpoints on the suns surface or photosphere of these magnetic loops can be more precisely measured using an instrument called a magnetograph which measures the strength and direction of magnetic fields scientists also turn to models they combine their observations measurements of the magnetic field strength and direction on the solar surface with an understanding of how solar material moves and magnetism to fill in the gaps simulations such as the potential field source surface or pfss model shown in the accompanying video can help illustrate exactly how magnetic fields undulate around the sun models like pfss can give us a good idea of what the solar magnetic field looks like in the suns corona and even on the suns far side download other resolutions from our scientific visualization studio: http:svsgsfcnasagovcgi-bindetailscgiaid=12104read more at: http:wwwnasagovfeaturegoddard2016understanding-the-magnetic-sunscience paper: photospheric and heliospheric magnetic fields by carolus j schrijver and marc l de rosa original visualization: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto4391 |
