nasa comet ison039s path through the solar system
Bookmarked 671 weeks ago comet c2012 s1 ison may become one of the most dazzling in decades when it rounds the sun later this year like all comets ison is a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust often described as quotdirty snowballsquot comets emit gas and dust whenever they venture near enough to the sun that the icy material transforms from a solid to gas a process called sublimation jets powered by sublimating ice also release dust which reflects sunlight and brightens the cometbased on ison039s orbit astronomers think the comet is making its first-ever trip through the inner solar system before beginning its long fall toward the sun the comet resided in the oort comet cloud a vast shell of perhaps a trillion icy bodies that extends from the outer reaches of the planetary system to about a third of the distance to the star nearest the sunformally designated c2012 s1 ison the comet was discovered on sept 21 2012 by russian astronomers vitali nevski and artyom novichonok using a telescope of the international scientific optical network located near kislovodskthe first of several intriguing observing opportunities occurs on oct 1 when the inbound comet passes about 67 million miles 108 million km from mars during this time the comet may be observable to nasa and esa spacecraft now working at mars including the curiosity roverfifty-eight days later on nov 28 ison will make a sweltering passage around the sun the comet will approach within about 730000 miles 12 million km of its visible surface which classifies ison as a sungrazing comet in late november its icy material will furiously sublimate and release torrents of dust as the surface erodes under the sun039s fierce heat all as sun-monitoring satellites look on around this time the comet may become bright enough to glimpse just by holding up a hand to block the sun039s glaresungrazing comets often shed large fragments or even completely disrupt following close encounters with the sun but for ison neither fate is a forgone conclusionfollowing ison039s solar encounter the comet will depart the sun and move toward earth appearing in evening twilight through december the comet will swing past earth on dec 26 approaching within 399 million miles 642 million km or about 167 times farther than the moonthis video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovvisa010000a011200a011222like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard |

optical effects of special relativity
Bookmarked 747 weeks ago the video shows photorealistic representations of reduced c scenes this means that the speed of light has been slowed down from over one billion kilometres per hour to a speed of only one meter per second the consequences of this fiction have been restricted to optical effects and allows us to see special-relativistic effects not possible in everyday life the first scene is a trip down a highway without any relativistic effects note the position and orientation of the structures in the desertfor the next trip we enable relativistic aberration as we accelerate note that the angular compression creates an initial impression of backwards motion as we pass the sign it seems to rotate around this can be viewed as a terrell rotation or as angular aberration keeping the sign in our field of view as we pass it the back walls of the building are also visible and extreme distortion is visible on all the objects note particularly the sky steadily shrinking down to the vanishing pointwe now enable doppler shifting note that the red desert is blue-shifted ahead through the green and red causing a rainbow effect as the blue of the sky is further blue-shifted it drains of colour near the edges of the image the opposite happens - the sky takes on a reddish hue and the road is drained of colour as the red desert shifts into the infra-redwith full relativistic effects now including the headlight effect the image quickly turns monotone with objects near the edge of the screen darkened and the centre brightly illuminatedthe terrell effect can be illustrated with this flyby of a cube note the orientation of the cube change also compare it039s apparent position with the position indicated on the hud map remember we are seeing the cube as it was not as it isif we instead fly through the cube the structures terrell rotate independently seeming to turn the cube inside out note that even when we have exited the back of the cube aberration keeps most of it in viewanother property of aberration is that it preserves circles - that is a sphere will always present a spherical outline to any observer regardless of their relative motion we see this demonstrated by flying a camera around the earth at high speed though the camera is very close to the surface aberration wraps the earth into our forward field of view but because we are so close to the earth we can see only a small portion of its surface - so small regions about the size of borneo seem to bulge out and fill the sphere |

formula 1 2014 spanish grand prix technical highlights
Bookmarked 593 weeks ago formula one returns to europe fot the 2014 season for what is traditionally a key race: the spanish grand prix the barcelona montmelo circuit is familiar to the f1 teams and they frequently use the return to europe to introduce significant car upgrades designed to improve performance and increase downforcethis often adds to the demands placed on the tyres at what is already a high-energy formula 1 circuit because of the fast sweeping corners that put extreme forces through the tyres as a result pirelli will bring the two hardest compounds in the formula one rangepaul hembery pirelli motorsport director: quotit039s often said that barcelona provides the most accurate representation of the form a season will take because a car that performs well in barcelona should perform well everywhere the same is true of the tyres because the spanish circuit is one of the most demanding circuits we race on all year long and fast corners such as turn three put a huge amount of energy into the tyres as a result of which degradation is high the track surface is also quite abrasive and ambient temperatures can be high which increase the workload on the tyres further in the past we039ve seen up to four pit stops in spain with the changes we have made to the tyres this year we would now hope to see no more than three for the majority of drivers we made a solid start to our preparations for next year with the first dedicated in-season tyre tests in bahrain we039re looking forward to building on that work with four teams in spain after the grand prixquotjean alesi pirelli consultant: quotfor the tyres barcelona is one of the hardest circuits of the year the surface is quite abrasive but the main thing is all the fast corners that you accelerate through which take a lot out of the rear tyres in particular so this means that having the right set-up is absolutely essential to control degradation if you don039t do that you end up destroying the rear tyres and you lose pace very quickly the other problem becomes braking and acceleration: with worn tyres it also takes longer to brake and find traction out of the corners it will be interesting to find out how the cars are at barcelona this year: in theory with less downforce it should be less tiring for the drivers than it was in the past but we have to see which upgrades the teams bring as wellquotmore videos visit our youtube channel http:wwwyoutubecomsubscription_centeradd_user=sportscaronvideohttp:wwwsportscaronvideocomyou can also follow us on:facebookhttp:wwwfacebookcomsportscaronvideotwitterhttp:twittercomsportscarvideogooglehttp:plusgooglecomsportscaronvideopinteresthttp:pinterestcomsportscarvideo |
