you might find this kid039s art scary but he politely disagrees

meet callum donovan grujicich in his studio and on one of his foraging trips with his brother and see why the 12-year-old039s sculptures are turning headssubscribe to cbc arts to watch more videos: http:bitlycbcartssubscribecallum donovan grujicich is 12 years old he prefers making art to explaining it and he039s completely aware that you might find his own artworks kind of creepy but they039re not at all frightening to him they039re the result of experimenting scavenging for materials using his imagination and learning how to express himself through his art he039s self-taughtthe dolls callum makes or quotfigurative sculpturesquot as he prefers to call them are detailed pieces that evoke storybook worlds and rich symbolism but callum would rather not speak to meaning in his work when people ask him he says quoti want people to decide what they think it means instead of me telling themquotand they mean a lot even in terms of their individual part
fog-free glass

one of the most instantly recognizable features of glass is the way it reflects light but a new way of creating surface textures on glass developed by researchers at mit virtually eliminates reflections producing glass that is almost unrecognizable because of its absence of glare and whose surface causes water droplets to bounce right off like tiny rubber ballsthe new quotmultifunctionalquot glass based on surface nanotextures that produce an array of conical features is self-cleaning and resists fogging and glare the researchers say ultimately they hope it can be made using an inexpensive manufacturing process that could be applied to optical devices the screens of smartphones and televisions solar panels car windshields and even windows in buildingsthe technology is described in a paper published in the journal acs nano co-authored by mechanical engineering graduate students kyoo-chul park and hyungryul choi former postdoc chih-hao chang sm 03904 phd 03908 now at north carolina state university chemical engineering professor robert cohen and mechanical engineering professors gareth mckinley and george barbastathisread more at http:webmitedunewsoffice2012glare-dust-and-fog-free-glass-0426htmlfootage courtesy: kyoo-chul park bavand keshavarz ampamp hyungryul choimusic by: torture super sonic http:freemusicarchiveorgmusictortue_super_sonic

shape memory polymers: plastic with a brain and some muscle

for an explanation of the science behind this material watch: https:wwwyoutubecomwatchv=2de3d9slev8elastic materials are a common part of the everyday experience but the nylon spandex or common plastics most of us are familiar with are very different from a specific kind of material being developed in the lab of mitchell anthamatten associate professor of chemical engineering at the university of rochesterthe materials coming out of this lab are called shape memory polymers and they have chemical properties that allow them to do amazing things these polymers typically have a permanent state which is the state they039ll always return to after being stretched into what is known as a temporary state one unique attribute of this particular material is that they can hold their temporary state at about room temperature or below and return to their permanent state rather quickly with only a slight increase in temperature contact with the temperature of the human body is enough to melt the crystalline structures within the polymer and return them to their permanent statethe stored energy is another important capability of this material this attribute allows these materials to do work as they return to the permanent state such as lifting a weight or compressing somethingwhile shape memory polymers have been around a while scientists are understanding better ways to make them everyday and they soon may become a part of the everyday experience just as many other types of elastic already are
world039s first 3d printed house

china039s first buildings made with 3d printing technology were put into use in shanghai recentlywithout using a single piece of brick and a tile ten gray-color buildings were erected in qingpu district of shanghai earlier this monthlooking from a distance the buildings that were made with 3d printers are not different from the regular ones but on a closer look their walls seem like layered cakes with hundreds of gray layers piled up togetherthe wall bodies were printed out by 3d printers which were developed by the suzhou yingchuang science and trade development co ltd in east china039s jiangsu provincequotthe building materials are all printed out by our 3d-printers layer by layer and we piled them up all the layers are firmly connected with each other they won039t separate neither will they deform and collapsequot said ma yihe president of suzhou yingchuang science and trade development co ltda number of office workers have already moved into the buildings as their offices in shanghaiin one printing workshop of suzhou yingchuang company the 3d printers were seen busy printing out building materials layer by layer from a mixture of carefully-selected raw materials or quotinkquot including sand concrete and glass fibersthe layers are approximately three centimeter thick but five times as hard as the common construction materials according to ma yihequotwe can print the whole walls in the factory and then deliver them to the construction site our workers only need to pile the walls up by cranes like building blocks the walls are hollow inside the walls with beam columns are printed with bar steel inside the workers can just pour the concrete directly into the walls it039s very simple to doquot said ma yihema said the 3d-printed buildings not only could save construction materials but also prevent jerry-built projectsthe construction materials are all being produced in a fully-digital way through a central computing system which leaves no corner to cut in the entire process ma addedthe groundbreaking technology still has a long way to go before mass production as the 3d-printed buildings need to be further tested in their fire resistance durability as well as its internal structures experts sayhttp:wwwtheshortpenguincom

evolution of fcc structure in the presence of 100 lithium ions

a breakthrough in components for next-generation batteries could come from special materials that transform their structure to perform better over time the team039s theorist handan yildirim showed that formation of highly ordered structure is actually spontaneous if the conditions for cycling are right this simulation shows the evolution of a long-range order as revealed by the formation of regularly ordered layers of oxygen red circles these well-defined layers of oxygen are separated by layers of mixed metal ti blue and li green atoms that are randomly distributed

the dakota fire hole - stealth fire

what if i told you that you could make a fire that only you could see any passers-by will be totally oblivious to the presence of you and your fire if you want to get into stealth camping build a fire during gale force winds or just want to lay low then the 039dakota fire hole039 is just what you need first things first you039ll need to dig a pretty deep hole about 2 to 3 feet deep is a good standard but the bigger the fire you039re planning to build the deeper and wider you039ll have to dig so its ultimately up to your discretion i039ll be making a small personal fire so i039ll go 2 foot deep and 15 feet wideas long as you go balls deep and don039t be a bitch about it you can get the hole dug in 5 minutes flat i would suggest using some form of entrenching tool you can use a stick and your bare hands but that will take significantly longer and you039ll probably want to kill yourself halfway through out of frustration now step 2 you039ll need to dig a smaller hole about 1 foot away from the first hole you don039t need to dig as deep for this one but a depth of 15 feet is a best practice this hole will connect to the primary hole via a tunnel the purpose of this secondary hole and tunnel is to allow oxygen to flow into the fire as the heat and flames of spewing out of the bigger hole won039t allow any oxygen to enter from above this secondary hole also allows you to blow oxygen into the fire yourself with your breath without risking burning your eyebrows off if you chose to do that over the primary hole keep tunneling your way through until you reach the other sidebut don039t stop there keep digging away at the edges until its big enough for you to fit your arm through like a cheap hooker the bigger the tunnel the more oxygen that can enter meaning a more sustainable firenow that039s all done it039s time to build a fire the same practices of traditional fire making still apply a raised wooden platform to keep your fire off the ground which will burn down into a layer of embers over time utilize dead dry materials that have been hanging above the ground y039all already know the deal make the fire as you would make it on the surface you can fiddle about with the structure of the fire in anyway you see fit make a tipi a perimeter a log cabin build sup to you man if you want to cook over this type of fire then it039s just a simple matter of placing thick living green branches either over the top of the hole or jam them into the side of the walls living green materials won039t burn over the fire so your cookware will be safe to rest upon itthere039s a common misconception that these types of underground fires produce no smoke this isn039t strictly true an underground fire does hotter and more intensely than one that039s exposed to a colder atmosphere on the surface and that does limit its smoke emissions there039s a lot of chemistry involved in explaining why that is so i039ll save that for another video don039t want to go too off track here but if we refer back to the list of smoke generators i included in my signal and rescue video wet materials resinous and green materials will still produce smoke so it039s best to utilize the driest and deadest possible materials you can find if you really want to limit your visibility the smokeless fire pit comes from a rather unique way of building fire we think of fire building as a bottom up process we build a base fire and then add material on top of it for a smokeless fire we need to flip things upside down and have our fuelwood on the bottom with our fire on top the fire on top is started with copious amounts of kindling constantly fed with dry small twigs and dry wood shavings directly on top of the fire which will burn the large pieces of fuelwood below the reason this produces no smoke is because as the air flow from the secondary hole works its way up through the fuel wood it pushes all the gases and vapors which we call smoke which come from the moisture resins and oils contained within the fuelwood the air pushes it up into the hot flames where it burns off because of the heat intensity of underground flames if those gases and vapors didn039t have to travel upwards through the flame like in a traditional fire then you would have a smokey fire when you039re done be a gent and fill the hole back up no need to break people039s ankles as they pass on by in the future peace bros if you desire then you can pack all of the mud you039ve dug up on to the outskirts of your hole to give yourself a large wall to help you conceal the tips of your flames if they ever reach high enough to emerge out of the hole ------------------------------------outdoor skills for wilderness survival bushcraft hiking and recreational campingtwitter: wwwtwittercomalfieaestheticsfacebook: wwwfacebookcomalfietheaestheticgoogle: wwwplusgooglecomalfieaesthetics
