a few years ago i discovered an interesting insect behaviour whereby i could seemingly control large swarms of tiny fliesgnats simply by singing a range of tones to them i first noticed this in the uk in 2004 but have since been able to replicate the experiment several times here in australia and more recently captured it on videoinitially i noticed that a swarm of gnats above me seemed to slow their frantic movement when i started to speak and after a little experimentation i discovered that certain higher pitched vocals would cause the flies to noticeably rise upwards as a group and then rapidly drop downwards again upon ceasing the tonei039ve noticed this both with gnats in a forest environment and also with sand fly swarms at the beach what039s also interesting is the flies seem to have excellent hearing over quite some distance as i have seen them reacting to a dog barking perhaps 50m awayi039d be interested to know if anyone has ever noticed this insect behaviour before or been able

due in large part to all the flood waters along the missouri river we have a lot more bugs around the tree tops ditches and cornfields now quotsmokequot with bugs at dusk one night i found this crazy display of bugnadoes vortex formations of bugs the first night i saw them swarms of dragonflies were around flying through them eating them anyway i was going to wait to make a video until i went over more times and maybe found even better formations and shows of them i039m finding it rather hard to top this one particular night it039s easy to find them but hard to find such huge numbers which made seeing things a lot easier it039s also a small window of time after sunset when they are easiest to see so the trick is finding where the larger numbers are that particular night and finding an angle and shooting them before it is simply too dark which comes fast while mosquitoes were nailing me at the time i don039t think these are mosquito swarms something else i think anyway
