stephen j dubner of freakonomics fame thinks the united states would benefit from a national firearms safety administration to collate firearms data similar to how the national highway traffic safety administration handles transportation data dubner039s latest book is quotwhen to rob a bankquot http:googlenqzf8read more at bigthinkcom: http:bigthinkcomvideosstephen-dubner-on-big-data-and-gunsfollow big think here:youtube: http:googlcptsv5facebook: https:wwwfacebookcombigthinkdotcomtwitter: https:twittercombigthinktranscript - one of the reasons that the gun debate in this country is so contentious is that theres very little good data on who owns guns and what share of guns used in crimes are illegal guns and part of the reason theres not good data is because the debate is so contentious in the first place but you know one proposal that i like a lot is to create kind of a national firearms safety administration something like the national highway traffic safety administration nhtsa which collates transportation dataso if we want to know about what really causes you know theres still 30000 to 35000 traffic fatalities a year thats a lot considering how much we drive its not that much but thats a lot of death the more we know about how every accident happens the better we can do at preventing similarly with something like guns the more we know about how guns are used how they get in the hands of the people who use them for crime the vast majority of guns are never ever ever ever used in any crime so you know that i think is a really useful way to look at what data can doi think right now we have people on one side of the gun debate saying you know we need our guns for whatever and you know leave us alone the other side is saying all guns are terrible and you need to take them all away both those arguments would seem to be a little bit nave but we cant really get to a better place because we dont have the data you know i grew up in i personally grew up in a gun culture i grew up in upstate new york where most families had guns for hunting target practice whatever the vast majority of people i knew never used their guns for any crime most laws that we make to protect people from guns are usually ignored by the criminals and obeyed by the law abiding people and so i think that if you had better data thered be no one more in favor of it than law abiding gun owners because they dont want to be smeared and lumped in with the criminals who use guns so thats where data can be a kind of different tool in the arsenal when youre trying to make better policy or public policy because otherwise youre just kind of shouting at each other with your ideology rather than understanding how people actually behave

the cosmological argumentthe problem with the first cause argument or its more sophisticated incarnation the kalam cosmological argument is that its major premise - that the universe matter and time sprang from quotnothingnessquot - is not proven no cosmological model states this most models suggest that the universe existed in another form apart from matter or time quotuntilquot the big bang happened hence what the big bang represents is not anything coming into existence but merely an already existent phenomenon transitioning from unrecognizable form into matter and timeeven if the first cause or kalam cosmological argument039s premise were true in that the universe consisting of matter and time had a beginning from nothingness all that one is doing is trading one impossibility for another the kalam argument states that since nothing can come from nothing the universe had to have a causeyet how do we know that nothing can come from nothing well the only way we can know this is by observation and making an inference from that observation and applying it to the universe at large put aside for the moment the fundamental problem that nowhere have we ever observe pure nothingness if we preclude that the universe cannot come from nothing based on what we see around us we must also deny the ex nihilo creation of the universe by god why should we deny the ex nihilo creation of the universe by god well if we say that nothing can come from nothing by taking our observation of what we can see and applying that the universe then we must also deny ex nihilo creation because we have never seen any creature create something out of nothing if inference from one observation applies to the universe at large so does the other inferenceit is at this point that the theist will say that god can create things ex nihilo because he transcends scientific laws and he is miraculous etc etc etc to this i answer how convenient essentially they are defining god in such away that makes him immune to argument well can039t we do the same can039t we say that the universe039s emergence from nothingness is a miracle because the universe is miraculousfundamentally it comes down to what david brooks said well: quotto explain the unknown by the known is a logical procedure to explain the known by the unknown is a form of theological lunacyquot and that is what is precisely wrong with the cosmological argument and the teleological design argumentto explain one mystery how the universe came to exist with another mystery god who suffers from the same problem as the first mystery how does god exist and create anything is not an explanation or proof of anything you are just compounding the conundrum unnecessarily it is more intellectually honest to say i don039t know how it all happened than to say god did itit should be stated that even if the kalam cosmological argument were true it still does not prove the christian god or any specific entity for that matter at most it proves the need for an uncaused cause that may have intelligence to say that this proves the christian god or allah is to commit the biggest of non sequiturs -aphacause
