primitive technology: new area starting from scratch
Bookmarked 428 weeks ago i bought a new property to shoot primitive technology videos on the new area is dense tropical rainforest with a permanent creek starting completely from scratch my first project was to build a simple dome hut and make a fire first i took some wood abroma mollis for fire sticks i knapped a small stone blade and used it to strip the fire sicks palm fibre was then taken for the tinder the fire stick kit was then placed under a palm leaf to keep it out of the rainnext a stone from the creek was fashioned into a simple hand axe this was used to cut a staff that was used to clear a path to the hut location the location for the hut was a clearing densely crowded by native raspberry this was then cleared using the staff and a small 25 m circle was levelled ready for buildingeight 275 m long saplings were cut using the hand axe and brought to the site eight holes about 25 cm deep were hammered into the ground in a circle 25 m in diameter and the saplings were then planted in the tops were broug |

the food lab: how to roast the best potatoes of your life
Bookmarked 479 weeks ago read up on the full details here: http:wwwseriouseatscomrecipes201612the-food-lab-the-best-roast-potatoes-everhtmlthis year i decided to reexamine my potato-roasting method from the ground up with the idea of completely maximizing that crisp-to-creamy contrast in each chunk of potato testing and retesting every variable from cut size to potato type to boiling and roasting methods the result is this recipe which i firmly and un-humbly believe will deliver the greatest roast potatoes you039ve ever tasted: incredibly crisp and crunchy on the outside with centers that are creamy and packed with potato flavor i dare you to make them and not love them i double-dare youwhy this recipe works:- large chunks of potato maximize the contrast between exterior and interior- parboiling the potatoes in alkaline water breaks down their surfaces creating tons of starchy slurry for added surface area and crunch- infusing the oil with garlic and herbs gives the potato crust extra flavornotesrus |

110hp case steam tractor pull pinckneyville illinois august 15 2014
Bookmarked 543 weeks ago 110hp case steam tractor pull pinckneyville illinois august 15 2014 do not worry about the fire hazard what you see is a very exaggerated amount of burning embers coming from the smokestack the sparks are created as a night spectacle for entertainment before this pull sawdust was added to the firebox to enhance the night quotspark showquot having said that back in the day there was always a risk of fire there was less of a risk during plowing season the highest risk was during harvest when the steam engines returned to the fields to thresh separate the grain from their stalks in typically dry fields weeks before the steam engines arrived the grain was cut and bundled by binders these mechanized machines looked the front of modern quotcombinesquot but binders only cut and a bound the grain the crops were cut close to the ground by the binder leaving the grain heads connected to the shaft these bundles were approximately 8quot in diameter and were about 3039 tall after the crops were cut these bundles were stacked in small piles called quotshocksquot these shocks contained maybe 7 to 12 bundles and scattered all over the field the shocks were left in the field until the grain was dry enough to separate the threshermen traveled from farm to farm to thresh each farmers grain most individual farmers could not afford a steam traction engine so the threshermen provided this service to the farmer on threshing day wagons were brought to the field and would load the shocks of grain and haul it to the threshing machine where it was placed quite a distance and upwind from the steam engine that provided the power for the machine to do its work the steam engine provided power to the threshing machine via an extremely long belt to keep any embers away from the dry chaff and straw that was separated from the grain the shock piles of crop were gathered as they were needed and not all gathered up and piled in one place at one time that way if there was a fire it would be small and contained to a small portion of the harvest and not all of it the steam engines were also outfitted spark arresters while threshing not to mention these steam engines required water so water was generally available should a fire break out also the steam engines would burn the straw which was waste from process of threshing the grainone day i hope to make a video of these separate processes that is now preformed by a single combine as for now if you watch the movie quotof mice and menquot with gary sinise and john malkovich you can see threshing in actioni have posted another video of it that includes three synchronized videos that were shot from three different angles that night one angle is shot from a drone flying high in the air that can be spotted above the engine towards the end of this video if you liked this video surely you would like that video even more http:youtube_8dh853fs_0god bless and thank you for watching |

make an aa battery
Bookmarked 581 weeks ago in this video well show how to make an aa batterywarning: potassium hydroxide is corrosive zinc is a heavy metal and manganese dioxide is an irritant wear gloves when handling themget a 5 ml plastic syringe the one i got was from a company called bd and the catalogue number was 309603 discard the plunger and cut off the tip also cut the back up to the 5 ml markget a 5 by 3 cm sheet of zinc metal about 05 mm thick cut into the 3 cm side a series of cuts about half a centimetre long roll the sheet so it fits into the syringe tube dont roll it too tight so it falls out it should be big enough that it stays in by frictiononce you have the right diameter pull it out and bend inward the tabs we cut earlierthis should now form a zinc canprepare the cathode powder by mixing 8 grams of manganese dioxide and 3 grams of carbon powder this will provide enough cathode powder to make about ten batteriesthe carbon is just a conductor for the oxidant which is the manganese dioxide the best manganese dioxide to use has the gamma type crystalline structure the more common beta type crystalline structure will still work but will give lower current so try and get the gamma type if you can if you make your manganese dioxide electrochemically then it will be of the gamma form while manganese dioxide made pyrolytically is usually of the beta formnow get some filter paper or a coffee filter and cut a rectangle about 5 by 10 centimetres to that pour a five centimetre line of about one gram of the cathode powder also insert a 7 centimetre length of 2 mm thick pencil lead into powder roll that into the paper and fold over one side so it doesn039t spill outnow get the zinc can we made earlier and insert the cathode roll into it cut off or tear any excess paper if there is too much cathode powder that it doesn039t fit then youll need to pour some off if there is too little then youll need to take it out and add morenow insert the assembly pencil end first into the syringe container from earlier make sure the pencil lead goes through the hole in the tip then break off the exposed pencil lead and leave 2 mm for electrical contactfill the battery with electrolyte by dropping the whole thing in solution of 30 g of potassium hydroxide in 50 ml of water leave it for several minutes to soak in and then take it out and leave it on some tissue for another several minutes to drain out any excessand thats your battery mine had an open circuit voltage of about 1412 volts and two of them could power a cheap digital clocknow i know some of you are wondering what the electrochemistry is behind the alkaline battery under load the zinc anode reacts with the potassium hydroxide electrolyte to give zinc oxide and two electrons these electrons then go through the load and at cathode they travel through the carbon to the manganese dioxide the manganese dioxide reacts with water to produce manganese iii oxide and hydroxide ions the reactions stops and the batteries dies when either the zinc or the manganese dioxide is consumed or when the waste products build up and block further chemistry |

bow and arrow
Bookmarked 515 weeks ago i made this bow and arrow using only primitive tools and materialsthe bow is 125 m 55 inches long and shoots 60 cm 2 feet long arrows i don039t know the draw weight - safe to say greater than 15 kg 35 pounds perhaps the stave was made from a tree that was cut with a stone axe and split in half with a stone chisel i don039t know it039s name but it039s common here and is the same wood i use for axe handles one half was used for the bow and was cut to a length of 125 m 50 inches the limbs of the bow were carved with various stone blades so that the limbs tapered in width and to a lesser extent depth towards the tips the middle of the bow was narrowed in width to form a handle about 125 cm 5 inches long the string was made from the inner bark of a fibrous tree it was separated into thin strips and left to dry then it was twisted into cordage arrows were made of the same wood as the bow and were 60 cm 2 feet long a notch was carved into the back to accept the bow string they were fletched with bush turkey feathers picked up from the ground no turkeys were harmed in the making of this video a feather was split in half and cut into 3 lengths then resin and bark fiber attached the fletching on to the arrows the tip of the arrow was fire hardened and sharpened to a point the fletching was trimmed using a hot coal each arrow took about an hour to make a quiver was made of bark to hold the arrowsi cleared a shooting range with a semi rotten log as a target at 10 meters the accuracy was better than 50 for this narrow target and the arrows stuck into the wood enough so that they were difficult to pull out the bow was durable shooting about 200-300 times with the string breaking only 3 times i made a back up string and repaired them by splicing the ends back togetherin conclusion this was an easy bow to make the short design makes it easy to find a straight piece of wood for the stave a short string is also easy to make and short arrow shafts are easy to find short bows shoot fast and are easy to carry in thick forest the dimensions of the bow were based on those given in the sas survival handbook by john lofty wiseman but instead of carving it from a stave from the start i split the stave and then carved it i think this requires less time effort and skill it also gives a flat bow design that039s unlikely to break it does require wood that doesn039t twist much when split thoughyou can now support primitive technology patreon: https:wwwpatreoncomuseru=2945881ampty=h |
