genesys: an interactive computer-mediated animation system

this is a digital copy of a 15:42 minute 16mm film made in 1970 it presents a demonstration of one of the pioneering interactive systems that would enable artists with no previous computer training to do animation the system is called genesys and it was built by ron baecker as part of his 1969 phd thesisthis system is imho phenomenal for all kinds of reasons it mainly used the rand tablet the grandparent of today039s graphics tablets for input hence animators who were skilled in drawing were presented with a familiar tool - a stylus - with which to interact with the computer and be able to do so using already established drawing skillsthis was one of the first systems ever to practice user-centred design where the intended user was someone who not only was not computer literate but came from a field - animation - that was about as far away from engineering as one could be it is significant that the full demonstration is done by lynn smith such an animator and not by ron or one of his colleagues from mit my challenge to anyone who is not impressed by this is the following: find any other demo of a highly interactive computer system from 1970 or earlier that does thisbut this system is not just interesting because it did a lot of stuff a long time ago that we take for granted today it goes beyond this it introduces concepts in pen-based computing and not just animation that have high relevance today and yet are still not possible even on most pen-based systems animation or otherwise in particular the key notion of genesys is that of quotpicture-driven-animationquot that is a picture could either be a visible object or a motion path for some graphical object and furthermore not only could an object follow a hand-drawn motion path it could do so with the same dynamics as the line was drawni love this work it has a huge impact on my own and i am really glad to finally have a high-quality digital copy that is generally available so that this work can get the attention that it deservesthis work was done at mit039s lincoln lab and is just one example of the spectacular work that was done there on the tx-2 computerfor more information on genesys see:baecker ronald m 1969 interactive computer-mediated animation phd thesis mithttp:wwwlcsmitedupublicationspubspdfmit-lcs-tr-061pdfbaecker rm 1969 picture-driven animation proceedings of the afips spring joint computer conference 273-288for more information on the pioneering work at lincoln lab including genesys see:buxton william 2005 interaction at lincoln laboratory in the 1960039s: looking forward -- looking back panel introduction proceedings of the 2005 acm conference on human factors in computing systems chi03905 april 3-7 2005 1163-1167http:billbuxtoncomlincolnlabpdffor related historical work in interactive computer animation see also:nrc1971 keyframe animation 7 minute 45 second 16 mm film produced by the national research council of canadahttp:wwwyoutubecomwatchv=epie_h8jf6ebuxton w 2008 my vision isn039t my vision: making a career outof getting back to where i started in thomas erickson amp davidmcdonald eds hci remixed: reflections on works that haveinfluenced the hci community cambridge ma: mit press 7 - 12
sharks love to be petted - they039re like dogs

music: quotthere she isquot by dhruva aliman links below love and affection are terms not commonly used to describe encounters with large sharks but theyre used repeatedly by jim abernethy to narrate his recent get-together with a large tiger shark known as tarantino the special reunion at tiger beach in the bahamas was videotaped and footage shows tarantino swimming into the arms of abernethy and seeming to crave his caresses much like an affectionate dog craves those of its owner after a prolonged absence as abernethy and the shark are swept down current he returns to the camera and tarantino follows again swimming into his arms this happens twice in the footagei could tell she had missed it abernethy says of an apex predator he refers to as an old friendto be sure tiger beach is a special place known as a destination where close encounters can be enjoyed in what many consider to be a relatively safe environmentthe predators are fed during commercial di
watch wade from sprint radio shack in fallbrook ca on power trip

watch quotwadequot from sprint radioshack in fallbrook ca on power trip my objective is to verify meid number on prepaid phone box to verify it039s not locked and compatible with my carrier who uses sprint as it039s backbone when i entered the store i was greeted by a nice radioshack salesperson i asked her to grab me a phone from the back so i could cross reference the meid with my providers website great customer service up to this point as she was going to the back to grab the box quotwadequot stopped her dead in here tracks ignoring the customer sitting at wade039s desk totally ignoring wade039s customer he get039s in between me and the sales person aggressively out of left field asking me 20 questions like i was going to steal or hack a phone using the meid some how then actually accusing me that i was going to steal in so many words before this moment i had no idea such a thing was possible wade did a great job educating me on how to be a criminal instead of

what ifdomestic robots could be self-sufficient carnivorous domestic entertainment robots

exhibit at the what if exhibition in the science gallery trinity college dublin in 2009carnivorous domestic entertainment robots 2008 by james auger jimmy loizeau and engineered by alex zivanovicthis project approaches the subject of robots from an alternative perspective inspired by methods of survival in nature this series of robots references strategies of adaptation and bio-mimetics in their design developed for the home they avoid the stereotypical forms normally associated with robots and adopt a contemporary fashionable design aesthetic the robots utilise a microbial fuel cell to power themselves generating energy from biomass in the form of common household pests this gives them autonomy and to a degree they become living entities existing in a similar way to an exotic pet such as a snake or a lizard where we provide living prey and become voyeurs in a synthesized contrived microcosm

using lasers to create super-hydrophobic materials

scientists at the university of rochester have used lasers to transform metals into extremely water repellent or super-hydrophobic materials without the need for temporary coatings super-hydrophobic materials are desirable for a number of applications such as rust prevention anti-icing or even in sanitation uses however as rochesters chunlei guo explains most current hydrophobic materials rely on chemical coatings in a paper http:scitationaiporgcontentaipjournaljap117310106314905616 published today in journal of applied physics guo and his colleague at the universitys institute of optics anatoliy vorobyev describe a powerful and precise laser-patterning technique that creates an intricate pattern of micro- and nanoscale structures to give the metals their new properties this work builds on earlier research by the team in which they used a similar laser-patterning technique that turned metals black http:wwwrochesteredunewsshowphpid=2701 guo states that using this technique they can create multifunctional surfaces that are not only super-hydrophobic but also highly-absorbent opticallyguo adds that one of the big advantages of his teams process is that the structures created by our laser on the metals are intrinsically part of the material surface that means they wont rub off and it is these patterns that make the metals repel waterthe material is so strongly water-repellent the water actually gets bounced off then it lands on the surface again gets bounced off again and then it will just roll off from the surface said guo professor of optics at the university of rochester that whole process takes less than a second the materials guo has created are much more slippery than teflona common hydrophobic material that often coats nonstick frying pans unlike guos laser-treated metals the teflon kitchen tools are not super-hydrophobic the difference is that to make water to roll-off a teflon coated material you need to tilt the surface to nearly a 70-degree angle before the water begins to slide off you can make water roll off guos metals by tilting them less than five degreesas the water bounces off the super-hydrophobic surfaces it also collects dust particles and takes them along for the ride to test this self-cleaning property guo and his team took ordinary dust from a vacuum cleaner and dumped it onto the treated surface roughly half of the dust particles were removed with just three drops of water it took only a dozen drops to leave the surface spotless better yet it remains completely dry guo is excited by potential applications of super-hydrophobic materials in developing countries it is this potential that has piqued the interest of the bill and melinda gates foundation which has supported the work in these regions collecting rain water is vital and using super-hydrophobic materials could increase the efficiency without the need to use large funnels with high-pitched angles to prevent water from sticking to the surface says guo a second application could be creating latrines that are cleaner and healthier to uselatrines are a challenge to keep clean in places with little water by incorporating super-hydrophobic materials a latrine could remain clean without the need for water flushing but challenges still remain to be addressed before these applications can become a reality guo states it currently takes an hour to pattern a 1 inch by 1 inch metal sample and scaling up this process would be necessary before it can be deployed in developing countries the researchers are also looking into ways of applying the technique to other non-metal materials guo and vorobyev use extremely powerful but ultra-short laser pulses to change the surface of the metals a femtosecond laser pulse lasts on the order of a quadrillionth of a second but reaches a peak power equivalent to that of the entire power grid of north america during its short burstguo is keen to stress that this same technique can give rise to multifunctional metals metals are naturally excellent reflectors of light thats why they appear to have a shiny luster turning them black can therefore make them very efficient at absorbing light the combination of light-absorbing properties with making metals water repellent could lead to more efficient solar absorbers solar absorbers that dont rust and do not need much cleaningguos team had previously blasted materials with the lasers and turned them hydrophilic meaning they attract water in fact the materials were so hydrophilic that putting them in contact with a drop of water made water run uphill http:wwwrochesteredunewsshowphpid=3387help us caption ampamp translate this videohttp:amaraorgvga08
