family wraps home in greenhouse to warm up stockholm weather
Bookmarked 544 weeks ago the average temperature in stockholm in january is -3c 27f for marie granmar and charles sacilotto it can be much warmer thanks to the greenhouse that blankets their homefor example at the end of january it can be -2c outside and it can be 15 to 20c upstairs explains sacilotto he was inspired to build a house-in-a-greenhouse through his relationship with architect bengt warne who began designing the first naturhus nature house in 1974originally sacilotto looked for an empty lot to build an entirely new naturhus but he eventually settled on an old summer house on the stockholm archipelago using warnes design he covered the small tea house plus an addition in 4 millimeter glass the footprint of the greenhouse is nearly double that of the home leaving plenty of room for a wrap-around garden and since inside the bubble its a mediterranean climate the couple now grow produce atypical for sweden eg figs tomatoes cucumbersthe favorite spot is the glass-covered roof deck since theres no longer need for a roof the couple removed it and now have a large space for sunbathing reading or playing with their sun on swings and bikesthe greenhouse isnt the only novel point to the granmar-sacilotto home they are also completely independent from city sewage built by sacilotto- an engineer by training- the sewage system begins with a urine-separating toilet and uses centrifuges cisterns grow beds and garden ponds to filter the water and compost the remainsoriginal story: http:faircompaniescomvideosviewfamily-wraps-home-in-greenhouse-to-warm-up-stockholm-weather |

Bookmarked 511 weeks ago i built this grass hut up on a ridge it039s roughly parallel with the tiled hut and wattle and daub hut that are a couple of hundred meters away down in a valley i built it on a ridge to get away from mosquitoes in wet weather this project took 7 days to make i looked for a spot and cleared it on the first day built the frame on the second and spent the next 5 collecting grass grass is difficult to collect in this dry forest and i had to climb further into the mountain to get it the design is a simple pointed dome that039s easy to build the tools used were simply sharp stones and a digging stick it039s 25 m wide and 2 m tall 8 lawyer cane strips were driven into the ground to form the ribs of the structure and hoops of cane were put over this to attach the grass to vine was used to tie the frame together and to tie handfuls of long grass to it when the hut was almost finished a cap was made and lifted onto the top of the dome to finish it this hut is easy to build and houses a large |
