after chasing it for more than two years i was finally rewarded with two displays of aurora australis southern lights within a week visible from mornington peninsula not far from melbourne the nights were warm an clear and the moon was not in the sky either - i could not have asked for better conditionsthe red color of this aurora is caused by the charged particles from the sun exciting oxygen atoms high in the earth039s atmosphere hopefully there will be more to come as sun039s activity increases in 2012-13being able to photograph it all night i came up with a nice video the brighter aurora happened on january 22nd and the smaller one featured in the middle section was from january 16th followed by a rather bright moonriseimages and blog:http:wwwterrastrocomblogred-auroratime lapse motion control performed with dynamic perception stage zero wwwdynamicperceptioncom music: coral reef by psychadelik pedestrianhttp:toucanmusiccoukreleasesreleasephpq=tou274

over the course of three days mar 5-7 2012 a single large active region blasted out over a dozen solar flares stereo behind spacecraft caught the action in extreme uv light saving the best for last it erupted with an x5 flare x is the largest category and a storm of charged particles as part of a coronal mass ejection we039ll be tracking this region around the far side of the sun with stereo and be ready if the sun039s rotation carries the existing activity back into view around march 28th the particles near the end of the clip look like a mass of squiggling amoeba a distortion caused by stereo039s image processing and note a large prominence dancing above the edge of the sun adds a nice touch to the videocredit: nasa stereosource: http:sohowwwnascomnasagovpickoftheweekold23mar2012
