nasa voyager finds magnetic bubbles at solar system039s edge

the sun039s magnetic field spins opposite directions on the north and south poles these oppositely pointing magnetic fields are separated by a layer of current called the heliospheric current sheet due to the tilt of the magnetic axis in relation to the axis of rotation of the sun the heliospheric current sheet flaps like a flag in the wind the flapping current sheet separates regions of oppositely pointing magnetic field called sectors as the solar wind speed decreases past the termination shock the sectors squeeze together bringing regions of opposite magnetic field closer to each other the voyager spacecraft have now found that when the separation of sectors becomes very small the sectored magnetic field breaks up into a sea of nested quotmagnetic bubblesquot in a phenomenon called magnetic reconnection the region of nested bubbles is carried by the solar wind to the north and south filling out the entire front region of the heliopause and the sector region in the heliosheaththis discovery has prompted a complete revision of what the heliosheath region looks like the smooth streamlined look is gone replaced with a bubbly frothy outer layerthis video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto10790like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard
the first earth-sized world of kepler

subscribe to the deepastronomy itunes podcast: http:feedsfeedburnercomblipnxliand add to ituneson january 10th 2011 after gathering and analyzing over 8 months of data transmitted from the spacecraft the kepler science team announced the discovery of the first rocky earth-sized world: kepler 10bthe good news is that this world is roughly the size of the earth it is 14 times that of our home the bad news is kepler 10b does not lie within the coveted habitable zone the orbit of this planet around its star is 20 times closer than mercury is to the sun it would be extremely unlikely to find life here

the sun lets fly a pulsing x-class flare

blog post with lots more info: http:blogsdiscovermagazinecombadastronomy20120128the-suns-still-blasting-out-flares-big-oneson january 27 2012 the sun erupted in the biggest flare of the year so far an x2-class it was twice the power of the flare earlier in the week but on the edge of the sun so it wasn039t aimed at us we039re in no danger but it makes for a pretty awesome light show credit: nasasdohelioviewerorg

nasa developing a comet harpoon for sample return

the comet nucleus sample return mission will collect subsurface samples from a comet and return them to earth comets and asteroids are leftover remnants from the early solar system and by studying samples from these objects we can learn more about the formation of our solar system and may find clues to the origin of life on earththis video is public domain and can be downloaded at: http:svsgsfcnasagovgoto10813 like our videos subscribe to nasa039s goddard shorts hd podcast:http:svsgsfcnasagovvisitunesf0004_indexhtmlor find nasa goddard space flight center on facebook:http:wwwfacebookcomnasagsfcor find us on twitter:http:twittercomnasagoddard

mars images suggests water-flow signs

video has no sound striking new images from the mountains of mars may be the best evidence yet of flowing liquid water an essential ingredient for life the sequence of images from the mars reconnaissance orbiter show many long dark quottendrilsquot a few metres wide emerging between rocky outcrops and flowing hundreds of metres down steep slopes towards the plains belowthey appear on hillsides warmed by the summer sun flow around obstacles and sometimes split or merge but when winter returns the tendrils fade away
alien matter detected by a nasa spacecraft orbiting earth

alien matter in the solar system shows that the chemical make-up of our solar system differs from that of the surrounding galaxy researchers discuss the possible meaning of this mismatch
